Sailing

I inquired a month or so about sailing conditions on Lake Mead. The responses were not what I expected. The few that responded said sailing at evening and nite were best, because of the heat. The cliffs were also something to contend with. Not what I would call "ideal" sailing conditions. Wind is hardly there from what I saw. I did a search for wind conditions and they looked to be sparse at best. Good luck and if you find any info please, feel free to pass it on. Keep it up, Ctskip

windless lake mead

I used to have a C-22 and belonged to a club. I had planned to trailer the boat out to LM since I used to ski there as a kid. Fellow club members said not to bother: There were two conditions at LM. No wind at all and way too freakin' much! I never went and the only sails I remember seeing were on Hobie cats that were flying a hull very high.

Lake Mead is great!

I've spent a couple of two-week sails on Lake Mead. One of them was at the turn of the century when there was talk ofterrorists blowing Hoover Dam! I love sailing on that lake -- it is BIG! I reckon the wind there is like it is on a lot of other lakes. I spent a hot afternoon floating on a mirror -- (be prepared -- plenty of ice, scotch and soda) and I've been knocked down by a sudden gust out of nowhere. I remember a lovely wing and wing that lasted for about 45 minutes and some days that the winds blew nice and steady. Lake Mead has several marinas and even a nude beach (so I'm told -- never looked for it or found it). The fishing there can be great. One evening while anchored in a cove two of us caught 31 pounds of catfish and striped bass. It has a lot of area to sail and explore and many secluded and exciting anchorages. I think you'll like it. Jim Schaff s/v Savannah

Crunch

I have been to lake mead several times but without my boat...bummer. Every time there was plenty of wind and the scenery is great. But I think that if you hit bottom it will be with a crunch!!!! Here on the gulf most of the time the worst thing that you will hit in the bays is oysters usally it is mud or sand. I noticed several rock islands sticking up here and there in lake mead. My son's friend who powerboats regularly on lake Mead recently hit one of these roaks and did a lot of damage to his motor. It can get incredibly hot and I would imagine that a windless period up in a 110 degree canyon would be miserable.
