Hi All: There is a possibility that I may be transferred to Florida this Spring, and I do not like the idea of shipping my boat (Hunter 386) by truck. I know many of us on the list have sailed from this area to Fl. and I am curious concerning time frames. This would not be a leisurly, fun, sightseeing trip for me.... I would have to get in the boat and go, and make the best time that I could. Potentially, I would have to get as far as I could in 3 weeks, then fly back and forth a number of times to complete the trip. What is the potential (weather permitting, naturally) that I could get to Buffalo, through the canal, and to South Jersey (my old stomping grounds)in a 3 week period ? I would forsee time bottlenecks at each end of the canal for mast stepping, and, of course, the canal itself with the locks. However, once free of the canal, the Hudson river and the Atlantic would offer opportunities to maintain a good pace ? (actually that's a question, not a statement). After South Jersey, I would make decisions based on inside vs outside, weather, available inlets and such with a goal of 150 to 200 mile weekends. I know this won't be the most fun I have had on a boat, but, I would be on my boat, I would be sailing, and I am more than willing to listen to the voices of experience on this list. Thanks........ Jeff

With good luck you could do the entire Hudson in about 3 days. Figure two days to get to Cape May from NY. I made it from Annapolis to Albany NY in six days traveling at seven knots the entire way

Moving to Florida!

But you just moved! Where and how good(bad?) the odds? We had figured a minimum of seven days to Troy. I think you have to figure five days on the Hudson to NY Harbor. Even so it would seem Cape May should be doable in three weeks. Then what? Outside to the Chesapeake or up Delaware Bay? I have some charts and since I am not going. . . . .

things to remeber...

The Erie Canal doesn't open until April, I believe--don't know the exact date. Check out the website for NY Canal system. You will have to add time for unstepping and stepping the mast. Also remember that weather could slow you down or stop you. Don't get into the mindset of "I have to move or else" because that will get you into trouble. If this isn't going to be a leisurely, fun sightseeing tour than why do it? If time is a factor than why not ship it the quickest way?

I agree with Steve

Why not ship the boat down by truck before you move down to FL and then have 3 weeks to explore the cruising waters of FL? Dan B Sotto voce 1973 Catalina 27

movement

I am retired and have nothing to do. If you will pay my airfare I would be glad to move your boat for you.
