We had one just like it for a a few years. I the mast is intended to raise on the slots as it is lowered aft. There was never any damage to the base. If that were likely, it what probably already be damaged. The trick is to keep control as it is raised or lowered slowly so thank it doesn't get away from. Then something or someone is likely to get hurt.
