Lagoon Pond Martha's Vineyard

Vacationing in Vineyard Haven Martha's Vineyard. The admiral and kids are taking the ferry and I was going to sail there. I was wondering if any of you might have local knowledge and advise entering the Lagoon? There is a bridge with a narrow opening and seems like a bit of current running from my observation.
What are your opinions anchoring a boat unattended for a few days? I will be able to see her at the end of our street but don't want to sleep on her every night. I understand it very well protected and holding is good.

Bob - We took our C-30 to Vineyard several years back. We stayed on a mooring just outside the lagoon in Vineyard Haven (right inside the breakwater). I recall there being several places to pick up a mooring around there if you need to wait out the tide for some reason (or just anchor). I am not familiar with anchoring inside the lagoon. On approach though to Martha's Vineyard, make sure you time yourself properly with the tides, especially if you are coming from the west via Vineyard Sound. The tidal currents can slow you down to a crawl if they are working against you...and just the opposite when they're not

After a horrible night in the outer anchorage/mooring field at Vineyard Haven in a north wind, moved into the lagoon first thing in the morning along with several others. The lagoon water was flat and sheltered, much to our relief. Stayed two days and enjoyed out time. The holding is good and there is a mix of shallow and deep water. The bridge works on schedule and he even left it open longer to help other boats who were trapped outside. The trip through the bridge is not for the faint of heart as there is only 30 ft or horizontal clearance with a turn just before entering. Add a 2-4 knot following current which can happen and it will keep you interested. Saw about 10' of water at almost low tide when passing the bridge. Its a pretty long dinghy ride to town, but thats the only downside.

I've been in the outer harbor many times. Vineyard Haven and Edgartown's outer harbors are very exposed when the winds are out of the north. Had a terrible sleepless night a few years back. Personally, I like Tashmoo but the Lagoon is much closer to the house we are renting. Getting in and out for day sails looks a little ominous. Thanks for the post.
