Kind of got away from SBO there for awhile. This darn air card only works in the cockpit and it has been cold. Here in Vero Beach tonight it is probably in the fiftys and I am hiding behind the dodger out of the wind. After a long and rolling offshore run from Georgetown to St. Augustine and on to Palm Coast here is Ladylove’s story.

Sunday was a long day with wildfire smoke covering the channel, bad storm while we were in very open water with sideways rain and 35+ winds, not gusts but steady! Then visibility went to zero right before an open railroad bridge. So we anchored, great fun with the boat heeling 30 degrees without sails. It ripped a very big hole in the bimini which is now wrapped up.

Earlier we had been motor-sailing with the yankee(jib) when the winds went to 25 and we had a heck of a time getting her in. The lazy sheet got loose and tied a knot into the working sheet which would not let us roll it up. Just glad we got it down before the real winds hit. The Indian River is like a very large lake so it was like crossing Lake Erie. Just glad we were not out on the Atlantic.

Before the bad weather hit we were in a nice narrow area with dolphin playing right against the boat. We got some great pictures. The width of the ICW varies between a hundred feet and over two miles. But the “ditch”, the route between the marks, is seldom more than a hundred feet, usually much less. And if you get outside the marks you are on the bottom, it is that shallow. It does get stressful after a couple of hours at the wheel. Offshore we just set the autohelm, sit back, and enjoy the ride.

We got into Cocoa Beach and anchored with the wind still blowing over 25. Up at 0000 to check, still whistling through the rigging but holding fast. We have been sharing the cooking, kind of making up the menu as we go. Tonight it was talapia, rice, veggies, and a salad. And wine of course. :) Don did a great job with the tilapia, excellent!

We were off the anchor this morning by 08:30 on a sunny but cool morning. We had an excellent run down the very wide Indian River in very narrow channels and skinny water. We averaged over 6.5 knots, love my new 3YM30.

We called ahead and a canvas guy met us at the dock around 16:30. He had the bimini sewn and reinforced before we walked to dinner at 18:00!

Had a great dinner at the Riverside Café under the Vero Beach bridge. You gotta’ check it out. The forecast looks good for going out the Fort Pierce inlet tomorrow morning. If the weather holds we should not go ashore again until Key West. We just hope there is more sailing and less motoring on this next run. We do know that the weather will be warmer. Hope you are sailing or will soon. Crew of Ladylove: Don, Gary, Ed
P.S. Never wanted an enclosed cockpit until the night offshore from Beaufort, first picture!

COLD

I have a pic of myself somewhere will try to dig up. Coming down the Jersey coast couple years ago. I have on everything warm I own, including a ski mask. All you can see are my eyes and my lips. And the lips are blue. Cold weather sailing is no fun.

Ed:

WHY? I thought you retired and can do things when YOU want to do them. Maybe I should wait for another 5-6 years so I can do things when I want to or cannot remember why I am doing them! <g>

Too Bad

Too Bad about the weather, now I know why when I sailed from NY Oct 19 and got to Fort Pierce Oct 30,all offshore except two days ,weather, weather, weather,I was told it was a good time to go.
I was moving to Florida so sold all my ski clothes and I had plenty but sold every thing, lucky had friends with clothes that fit.
It was my first off shore trip and surprised it was not colder when we made the trip,a few ruff days but no where near the weather you are having,I waited until the end of Jan to go from Fort Pierce in warm wonderful weather to Punta Gorda in 5 days with the last day not so good but it was only for a few ours of the nasty weather.
My boat has real good protection with plenty good canvas,my dodger connector to the bimini did rip the zipper and had to remove,I did not need to use the side curtains,I could not believe how warm it was on most of the trip down the east coast.
I guess the Okeechobee is not an option????
I hope things improve for you and crew, the weather is suppose to get warmer starting thursday and see 80 by the weekend, does that make you feel warmer already.
What's your draft and mast height.

Hey Ed, It sounds like you're having a great time. It must be you that's bringing the cold weather down though. It wasn't all that cold before you got here!!! Quick, get south and bring the warm weather back up with you.
I was at the Riverside Cafe on Saturday night, for the first time, and you're right, the food is excellent. Not as good as Wahoo's on the Water in Stuart though. ( I have to say that, I manage the place)
It should be a better trip starting Wednesday and all through next week. The temps are going up finally. Enjoy your trip

Your expericence sure brings back memories of our FL journey last year. Things will get better temperature wise. You got a late start weatherwise. Most of the cruisers are below Stuart or in the Bahamas by the end of Dec.

If your air card is a USB type, we found that using a 10ft USB extension allowed us to use the computer down below in comfort with the card velcro strapped to the grab rail topside. BTW, the card also worked better outside the "envelope" of the dodger and bimini frames. Also remember to bring the card in at night even if the weather is good. Heavy dew will run inside the connection and down the cable possibly even into your computer. Don't ask me how I know!

Enjoy FL, we did and wish we were there again this winter.

I feel your pain man

I worked bow on a J-40 last weekend in the Commodore Cup regatta on Tampa Bay. We recorded 35 knots over the deck on Sunday. Saw 11.2 downwind with a blade and main.

Getting out of bed yesterday was VERY painful.

That's not COLD!

Ed,
We had Good News out on San Francisco Bay last week... sun peeked out and the temp might have made 55 or so.
Now I am in my mountain home where we had 18-24 inches of snow last night, and the high tonight will be 31 -- a heat wave.
Enjoy the Keys and Florida, but hang on to your wallet!

Do you have a website were you post logs, pic, videos? I love following people as they sail around. Check out "project blue sphere", pretty cool.
