The K-40, Lady J, came into the yard for a fresher and followup prior to the Port Townsend Wooden Boat Festival. We dressed her up, redid a couple of leaky seams and launched her.

Unfortunately, on the way to a fun weekend at Roche Harbor in the San Juans, she pulled her forestay tang out of the stemhead under sail at seven knots. Luckily, with the quick reaction of Don and Jean his wife, the owners, the rig stayed up and they got her back to us about seven in the evening on Saturday.

Here are some pics of the damage.

We will begin to effect repairs today. Apparently, the forestay tang was held in with a lag screw that somebody inserted sometime in her past, causing it to pull out. That won't be the case when I'm done with her. Sadly, she won't make the show this year.

More to follow....

One man can't install through bolts but he can install lags. The labor savings is very small.

Damn, that's a shame. Glad they saved the rig. Aside from the danger, having the whole thing come down would have really messed up your beautiful work.

Charlie;
I assume that the stem gets rebuilt with new teak and epoxy/glassed in place. How much dis-assembly of the bow will occur, and what are the estimated hours on a repair like that? What is the hull finish coat material and refinish schedule? Looks like a showpiece boat!

She is a showpiece boat that gets sailed a lot. We won't have to disassemble the bow that much this time. I had thought we would have to replace the stem post at first but have figured out a perfectly safe, acceptable and strong alternative. I will post up a thread showing the entire repair when she's done. The varnish schedule is likely 8-10 days to cut in and blend her to the current condition.
