Lack of Shine

Hi all,

I have taken notice of all the boats in the Northeast that have nice shiny hulls. We made our way into our own marina and were duly impressed by the one's getting ready to launch, they are really nice. So when we tied up to the dock our boat looked pretty tired compared to all the rest. It bothered me for a while then I thought it over. We been aboard for 8 months and logged over 2000 miles, all our shine is in the friends we've met and pictures we've taken. Waxing will be postponed until the weather is in the 80's. I'm taking a nap.

As friends, we all helped each other wax and shine our boats!
I think we shine them up because we have several weeks each Spring to commission our boats. I enjoy this phase. We learn from each other, make note of and gush over the latest mods, steal ideas ;) ...
I want my boat to show my love for her. She is proud among the fleet! She takes good care of me and the Admiral on the water.
At 29 years, she looks like a 5 year old, happy and giggly. :)

Welcome home, Tom and Mary. You left a nice wake and memories along the way. Well done !

Nearly half a century ago I was anchored in the tropical lagoon of my first South Pacific Isle when I heard a bang alongside. Scurrying up on deck I found an islander dumping half a dozen coconuts and a lovely fish on our deck. His nearly toothless smile spread from ear to ear and he said welcome in the patois of French Polynesia.
How could one be angry or upset with this welcome, even if his wooden pirogue was scratching the crap out of the paint on our 1909 classic Wm. Hand gaff ketch?
At that instant I decided never again to give too much thought to the "looks" of my vessels, 15 minutes after we got out of dry dock. My attention goes to the working systems on the boat, but we do not worry for every scratch, scrape or even stain we get from our encounters with the Caribbean boat boys or an oil spill along the way.
Life is just too short. We will wash and even wax the topsides from time to time, but we do not try to compare our much traveled vessel to those marina bound boats that might get used once or twice a month.

Ditto...
We wash ours 4-5 times a years. I may put a spit polish on her in 4 years when I bottom paint again.
Jim...

shine is highly over rated, but clean and orderly goes a long way in showing pride....

it has always been my opinion that nearly anyone can sign their name to obtain a shiny boat (car, truck, ect), or put the effort into making it so for vanity reasons, and boast about it and suck up the compliments they will get.... then after a few months or years, when the weather has taken its toll again, the prideful owner will still have a clean and very orderly boat, whereas the posers will not..... time will always separate the two, and the "shine" on the boat has nothing to do with it....:)

with all that said, my hat is off to those that actually can find the time to keep the boat waxed and polished over the many years of ownership, and hasnt worn it thru the gelcoat yet.... but I bow only to those who do it themselves, and not to the rich folks that hire it done for them....;)

Centerline, you are right. I spent some Summers polishing and varnishing for those who hire others to do it. They didn't know squat about their boats.
My Dad taught me to take care of things. Even though he made plenty of money, we washed, waxed, repaired and maintained our vehicles and boats. They worked AND looked good.
However, he had a problem with time... He would always say, "let's wash and wax the boat. It'll just take 15 minutes."
Huh?!!! :)
For me, Spring is time to dream of sailing while it is too cold to sail, but warm enough to begin work on the boat.

Oops, I meant 85 since I didn't see the forecast of 80 degrees Wednesday. We at our home and I'll probably wax the old Mustang this afternoon. Should only take 15 minutes.
