Fascinating racing, frustrating coverage
Watching a helicopter view of 2 boats in the starting box without being able to tell where the starting line might be is somewhat akin to watching a closeup of a golf ball rolling across a green without knowing where the hole is. Likewise those stunning views showing the bows of both boats plunging through the 6" chop, looking like they are a few feet apart and dashing neck and neck..... until we find out that the boats are a quarter-mile from each other and one has a 300 yard lead on the other.Nice camera work, but pretty useless when you're trying to follow a race. The animation technology - when they bother to show it - is absolutely AWESOME! The problem is that they use it so rarely that it becomes impossible to have any meaningful continuity. So here's a suggestion for the VS folks:ALWAYS use split-screen. Put the animation on the left half - let us see where the boats are in relation to the course and each other - and the rest of the visuals on the right side. That way, all us sailors who are anal about knowing EXACTLY where we are at all times won't suffer disorientation, nausea, vomiting.... seasickness! And one other suggestion - the 'live' aspect is nice, I suppose, but why not cover the races one after the other? I KNOW they are going on at the same time, but who really CARES? They obviously have two separate camera crews, so just show the first one to completion and THEN pick up the start of the second. As for the racing, it's awesome!BMW Oracle seems to be coming up lacking, but I'm not sure why. It looks to me that the two major factors in determining the outcome are: a) pre-start maneuvering and b) finding the best wind shifts on the course. Luna Rossa is winning both of those.I was also interested to hear yesterday that BMW Oracle had made some hull modification (speculation is that it was a keel wing change) between race 2 and 3. Pretty obviously they were looking for more up-wind speed, but the result was equally obvious: they took off enough down-wind speed to keep them from winning the way they did in race 2, but didn't go any faster up-wind.From my lofty position of total ignorance

that seems like a bad decision. That boat was a rocket sled on the down-wind legs.Cheers,Bobs/y X SAIL R 8
