I was going to cut down my backstay to install a Johnson Lever but since 20% of the cable was cut thru (by PO) I decided that replacement was the best deal so we checked out West Marine (we have a couple of gift cards there). Total cost would be about $120 plus shipping. The problem was that it would take a couple of weeks. So I went to Hamilton Marine in Portland to get a Stalok fitting as a temp fix while waiting. On a whim, I asked if they had a rigging shop which they don’t b This kid helped as best he could but they were out of the part that I needed. Then he said, “Why don’t you just go to the rigging shop down the street? I know the guy and he’ll probably do it for you today.” So off I went to Portand Yacht Services’ rigging shop. The young fellow there started taking my order when the intercom blasted the news of a boat launch at the ramp, which he really wanted to be there for. He stopped and said “If you don’t have this today, will you sail tomorrow?” “No”, I said. He took the time and made me a new stay, right there for $97, no shipping, no waiting and no temporary parts. He saved me $50 and my July 4th weekend.
My hats off to Hamilton Marine of forgoing a sale to make a customer happy and to Portland Yachts’ rigging shop for responding to a fellow sailor. It really made my day and my weekend.
