Thanks Maine Sail for the great pictorial on how to convert a Leece Neville Alternator from internal to external regulation. Did it last weekend and it was easy as pie.

I'm having trouble finding anywhere what the voltage of a fully charged AGM battery should be compared to a Gel vs. a Wet cell.

Always check with the manufacturer of your battery. There is some slight variation in full charge voltage.. What brand of battery do you have?

AGM Battery

I bought them at West on sale last summer. Power Tec. Group 24, 79 amp hour batteries. I have 6 in parallel for a house bank. I have a 105 amp alternator now with a Balmar 3 stage charge regulator and a link 20 monitor. Since new, they only seem to charge up to 12.7 or 12. 8 volts.

Not Charging Voltage issue

When charging, the 3 stage charger runs around 14.2 Volts.
I'm talking about the voltage after the batteries have been fully charged and the alternator and charger are off. Initially, they read about 13.1 but after a few hours of stabilization, they drop.

Yep and they should drop. 13.1 volts is a surface charge on the plates, not the real charge. You need to wait 12-24 hours with no loads and no input before taking an accurate resting voltage reading, or WIPE the surface charge with a large load and then wait about a half hour and take a reading. This "wipe" will not be 100% accurate but a lot closer than 13.1V...

100% = 12.73

90% = 12.62

80% = 12.50

70% = 12.37

60% = 12.24

50% = 12.10

40% = 11.96

30% = 11.81

20% = 11.66

10% = 11.51
