Hello, I have a 78 Catalina 30, it is powered by a 30hp atomic 4 which is nearing the end of its useful life. I have heard that there is a Kubuta Deisel which is a drop in replacement for the Atomic 4, does any one have any details (Model Numbers, availability etc) Thanks Bill

I think you are looking for Universal B-series.

Check out this site. Universal is a Kabota that has been marinized. The M3-20 is a drop in replacement and a sweet running 3 cylinder. Don't forget, if you have a fixed prop, that will have to be replaced also.

Kubota is right

The Universal M25, which is, I think, the diesel put in hte C-30's is a marinized Kubota D850. You can have on built much cheaper than buying one from Westerbeke/Universal. See Pamlico Diesel. see link:

Diesel Replacement

Bill, We are in the "same boat" so to speak. I have my Yanmar YSE12 from our 77 Catalina 30 out and at the machine shop for a total rebuild. I have however run into a problem in that they had to turn the crank 20 thousands and then I find out that you cannot get a rod bearing in that size from Yanmar. So I have been looking at options and have found two rebuilt Yanmars in Sidney at a marine engine shop. One is a 2GM which only has 13 HP for $4500. and a 23 HP for $6000. I have also looked into the Sole diesel which is really a Mitsabishi converted for marine use. The 17 HP model is at $6900 and the 26 HP about $7900 I believe. I am unsure whether to continue with the rebuild of my little YSE12 by having the crank wire welded and then turned to 10 thousands or going after the 13 HP Yanmar. I have a spare YSE 12 also for a parts engine so a rebuild is the most practicable way for me to proceed. If you wish I can provide you with the marine engine shop's name and tel # since you are only an hour or so drive away. Pamlico Diesel

I contacted Pamlico Diesel after reading these posts. The M25 is analogous to the D850, but Philip at Pamlico said it would be much more expensive to "marinize" a D850 than to buy a new Universal. He did say that a rebuild would be 40 - 60% less.

Many Thanks

Thanks for al the replies. I have the option of buying another Atomic 4 which is running and rebuilding the engine, I realize it would cost a lot less but I would still like to change the unit to a more modern engine. If anyone knows of any used or rebuilt diesels, Yanmar or Universal that would fit the space available feel free to email me at:- meridian@qualicum.ark.com Still Lots to ponder. Bill
