Is anyone familiar with the Kubota diesel? I'm looking at a 30' Catalina with a Kubota diesel inside and was wondering how they worked? I know there blocks are used on a couple of american versons and they have been around for a long time. But I don't know much more. Any infomation would be great? Thanks, JOHN

The Kuboat diesel on our 1988 C-30 has done real well. The XP25 has enough power to buck headwinds and seas in S. F. Bay and off the coast. It burns about 1/2 gallon of fuel per hour at cruise speed. The basic engine hasn't needed any repair, but we have replaced the bushings in the engine's salt water pump, and we replaced the engine coolant pump, just for general principles. The heat exchanger has also been replaced, just for genral principles. This seems to be very satisfactory service for 15 years of use. Chuck COLUMBINE 5153

Hello John, I have a 1983 C30 with the M25, it has about 1100 hours on it, it runs great. I do wish they put the oil filter some where else, and a better way to drain the oil. Great engine, plenty of power for the 30', I think many of the C36's and C38's used the same engine. Best of luck Jack

Kubota = Universal (later Westerbeke)

Hi John - My 1986 C36 had a Universal M25 engine. It had untold hours on it (the hour meter was inoperative when I took posession of the boat reading 1860+ hrs), but always ran like a champ. Check the engine carefully, but genreally speaking, the Kubota engine should work great on your C30. A great feature is the electric fuel pump that allows easy automatic air bleeding for restart, should you ever run out of fuel. Best of luck, Trevor

M25

When I went "shopping" for a C-30 the broker nearly insisted I get one with the M-25. I've heard a lot of complaints about C-30's being underpowered with the (I think) 11 HP engine that some of them came with. I've really appreciated to extra 10 HP, especially going against the tide at the end of the day. Sometimes on calm days we'll do some waterskiing in San Diego Bay. (Just kidding, but it does move ya!). I've never had a problem with the engine and recommend it highly.

second that emotion

I have a 1982 Cat 30 and the current engine is the Universal 5411 11 hp diesel. As with most universal engines it is a Kubota block. This is a good thing as you can buy parts at the local tractor dealer! I am in the repower mode right now. The head is corroded and can't be repaired economically. Since raw fuel got into #2 cylinder I am concerned that redoing the top end will be a matter of throwing good money after bad. I believe the 11 hp is fine for most protected water conditions. Where it absolutely is terrible is bucking a 10 kt or better head wind. Does tacking under power sound like fun? The calculations for a cat 30 at ~10000+# call for a 22 hp engine. The posts here support that. I am torn between 3 engines: The Vetus M3.09, the Beta BD722 or the Universal M3-20B. All good engines with nice accessories. Very little is required to fit one in the existing space. Anyone out there have opinions as to which engine? I am really curious if anyone has tried the Vetus route - it is smaller and slightly more hp at upper RPM.

Kubota engines

I did some research and found that on the Catalina 28's, Westerbake(s) bought @500 blocks from Kubota between 1990-1994. This info is on the Westerbake home page in the "history of Westerbake", a small 1 paragraph entry. On mine I found that not only was the block a Westerbake but alot of the add ons were by Mitsubishi parts used on fork lifts. The starter was @$600 for a Universal and @$135.00 for a Mitsubishi, the same for other parts, With this I can get parts at a car dealer if I really need to in a pinch. Good Luck
