Komatex, Sintra, PVC Sheet closed cell foam

I have settled on closed cell PVC foam sheet as replacement for marine plywood projects I am currently working on. I am shot-gunning all forums for any marine experience with this material. I have satisfactory experience with it for companionway hatch covers on my 1986 Hunter 23.

I have used Airex core and corecell

with great success but I have never heard of the other two brand names you mention.

I have some experience...

Most of my experience has been with Sintra brand PVC sheet. As a museum exhibit designer and fabricator I have used PVC sheet extensively, which led me to use it as a material for fabricating hatch screen frames for my Hunter. I have some screen frames that are over 10 years old and show no signs of UV degradation. I think that the frames can be expected to last as long as the PVC screen material does.

Mark I googled Komatex and it seems

to be similar to the vinyl foam that is used for exterior trim on new houses. I don't think that I would use it for anything that required substantial structural strength. For that I would stay with plywood. Please let us know what you decide and how it works out. Thanks. Ross

Going ahead with PVC closed cell

I'm going ahead with using this material to replace the gunwale core on my 1986 Hunter 23, and to replace my aft bulkhead. I'm posting progress on these projects on the H23 forums. Thanks for input. Mark Major '86 H23 Lesismor
