I found a tiny piece of fan belt lieing next to my 8 KW Koehler generator on my 1996 P42 last weekend. I guess I'll be treated to a fan belt replacement soon. Has anyone tackled this job yet? I think I'll have to remove my starter and one of my house batteries since the fan belt gaurd sits right behind them. Any thoughts?

It Is An Awkward Place To Work

It is a time consuming job to change the belt. My advice is to pull the starter battery, the inverter, and the top house battery. Once those are out of the way it is not too bad. Just be sure that you unhook the negative battery cables first, and unplug the shore power before you begin. While you are at it, you may as well learn how to work on the raw water pump. It will not get easier later.

Rich is right on about your topic. I was able...

to do the work without removing the inverter and battery. There are three bolts that secure the belt guard to the engine. Two you can see easily. The third requires a small mirror because it is behind the guard. The lower bolt that secures the alternator to the engine also is where the belt guard bracket mounts. The bracket is slotted so once you loosen that bolt and remove the other two the guard will come right off. From there it is easy to replace the belt. Terry
