I just got a trailer for my H22, ( used ) and it's equipped with Kodiak calipers. I wanted to check out the pads, piston movement, etc, so had it apart today. The trailer is from Karavan, up in Wisconsin.

The outside pad apparently is installed, tabs protruding thru holes in the caliper body. Then tabs are bent over ( hammer ) to secure the pad in the caliper. Am I missing something or is this really how they go in??

The piston side pad is normal, has a spring clip of sorts that fits into the piston.

I will review the information I can find on line tomorrow, but was just curious if I was correct, or is there a glaring issue I'm overlooking.

No, you really didn't miss anything. However, those tabs are just used in installation to locate the pads in the caliper. Under NO circumstances should they be "bent over (hammer)".

Good catch, glad you posted this question. Sounds from your description of the other side pads that everything else is normal. Suggestion: Go get new outside pads, install them, no hammer required...:) Then you should be good to go.

Thanks, guys. It just looked really strange to me. Interestingly, I was reading more posts here about brakes, just trying to see what other systems looked like, and I found

http://forums.hunter.sailboatowners.com/showthread.php?t=157246

Now my brakes look just like CaptDon01's post, third picture down. The bent over pin on the ends of the outer pad are just like his.

I tried to rotate the pad out of the caliper, 'unhooking' it if you will.. but no dice. There's a locating piece in the middle of the pad that mates very firmly with the caliper, visible in his picture right next to the hub, and I could see no way to get the pad out other than bend the pins up. I also cannot see any good reason to have the pad pinned in the caliper, as the locating piece in the middle plus the machined edges on the caliper locate the pad perfectly. My new ones will not be bent over, I don't think.
