There's another one I have on my iPod touch called Knot Time. Real good with videos and commentary on what to use the knot for. Not sure if its on Androids though.

In my youth, there was an app available called "BoyScouts", but apparently it doesn't run as well as it used to.

Ha, Boy Scouts. Is there even such a thing still around? I know the Girl Scouts are still around, but I think all they learn to do is sell cookies and make money for the corporate office..

I started reading the Field Manual cited above....maybe too much time on my hands.
Can someone recommend a lubricating or penetrating lubricating oil for quarter inch wire rope on a boat lift? Don't really want to buy a gallon. Thanks

Buy a cartridge of water proof grease at Home depot or Lowes. Less than 10 bucks. Get some cotton jersey gloves and grease the cables with your gloved hands.

Indeed they do exist.
My son went to his first camp this year, made Tenderfoot at 11 and is evidently a savant on the range.
Knots, not so much. I have taught Cubs, Weebs and Boy Scouts some basic knots and none of their parents are able to help them.

Why would they need to know? All they need to do is tie a square knot to the railing, ski tower. or seat bolster of their $80k wakeboard boat or party barge. They see a cleat and think the manufacturer just put it there for nostalgic reasons (ask me how I know).

Sorry to the OP, this thread has...

Thanks for the info on the waterproof grease and gloves. I'll try it this weekend. Sorry for the hi-jack.

LOL!

Yep that's where I and my Eagle Scout son learned "the ropes".

Don't you worry. There are plenty of troops still going loud and proud. My son is in sailing school this week and was the only one there who already knew the knots.

Sorry to hear that you apparently live somewhere that does not have active Boy Scouts. They seem to be active most everywhere else. Apparently none of the sailors around you have sons either, since you seem to say the kids you know only have power boaters for parents. As a former scout, the father of two Eagle Scouts, and an Assistant Scoutmaster then Scoutmaster for 42 years, let me assure you that I have seen hundreds of boys grow into young men through Scouting. All of them learned knots, and much more. Quite a few of them learned to sail through scouts. -Paul

A good friend's son just became an eagle scout this year. Absolutely awesome what they do and the experiences they gain through scouting. From hiking and camping in the wilderness, community service, learning respect, etc. Great organization and it should be promoted.

Not sure if this works for every one, but there is an app for Android users that looks very interesting. It's called “Knots 3D”. And for anyone who is an Amazon Prime member, it free today. It might even be free for all today??

You might want to take a look;

I have no connection with it, just thought it was interesting
There's a free version in the "Google Play" store. Doesn't have all the features of the paid version, but you can try it out. I'm downloading it now.

motor cycle chain lube in a spray can.... napa or any parts store is cheaper than the cycle shop. it works great, penetrates well, clings to cable and doesnt drip.... and good for harsh environments.
