I am looking for advice on keeping my knotmeter paddle wheel from fouling. I've tried transducer paint but that didn't help. It seems to need weeekly cleaning, although when i pull the plug there doesn't seem to be much stuff on it. I clean it with a piece of nail file, it runs fine for a few days, but if I leave the boat for a week, it needs to be cleaned again. I have a Raytheon ST-60, but I believe the transducer is made by a company called Airdyne.

Gary, I don't know if you have the same set-up as I do, but I pull my transducer and replace it with the plug provided when I'm not going to be using the boat for a week or more. The dealer recommended this during the shake-down (I have a 2003 Catalina 350).

Scat!

Gary- In the spring before the annual launch I lightly sand my VC 17 paint and repaint each year. At that time I spray, With a common atomizer spray bottle, the knot meter paddle and the depth transducer window with a product called "Zebra Scat". This product keeps marine growth off the bottom of things like Dingys, Painted sail drives, etc. So far no hair has been found on my knot meter paddle in the fall so it seems to work. Bon Chance, Mike

I really did hear that this works! I don't even know why! Diper rash ointment, go figure!

Did You Get

...the transducer paint all the way on the sides? When you inspect it, see where it's fouling and be sure you have paint there. I'm getting 4-6 months between cleaning so far. Of course, conditions can vary by location. No better solution from me. i've tried lots of stuff over the years. Rick D.

WD 40?

I was told to stay away from all petroleum based lubricants as they cause rubber and plastic parts (also petroleum based) to deteriorate. If this is true, should WD 40 be used in this application? I was told this specificaly for the rubber o ring around the speed wheel housing (inside), but I would think it applies in all non-metalic applications. True?

don't leave it in when not in use

Thats why the provide a plug.... In Florida, the wheel would foul in a day or 3.

How about in fresh water?

Is it fair to say that this discussion refers to salt water boats and it's OK to leave it in continuously in fresh water? My water is pretty fresh; I can see the Rocky Mountains from the cockpit.

No Good Reason To Pull It

The only reason some people pull the transducer is to keep it from fouling. If no fouling, no reason to pull it. Rick D.
