Knot Meter

Well, my 35 y/o knot meter finally bit the dust. It followed the depth meter, which decided it was time to retire last year. So, I'm looking for some ideas that might fit with a blue water, cruising mentality. I'm considering some type of Garmin or other device that I can flush mount in the cockpit that would provide speed and depth, in addition to interfacing with my Mac for GPS. However, I am open to any suggestions that get me at a minimum, depth and speed.

Does anyone have any suggestion for what has worked for them?

Hi Jack

Loads available, depends on your budget. I personally prefer Raymarine but NASA Clipper range is a middleground between budget system (Depth/Log combined Dual at about £190)

I've got Navman (Northstar) instruments. They seem to work well and accurately. Unfortunately, the displays have a problem with the parts of the liquid crystal digits not displaying. My depth display got water behind the glass face and which then cracked in the sun. From what I've read on the internet, these problems are typical. The units are probably about 8 years old or so and have been covered most of their life.

I'll probably save up for some tacktick instruments. They're wireless and solar powered, so I can store them in the cabin when not in use. The only bad thing I've read about them so far (other than the cost) is that the masthead unit for the wind speed doesn't last very long (4-5 years). -Tim

Sorry about taking so long to reply. Thanks for the info re: Navman and Nasa instruments. Either one looks like it will probably work. I'll take a closer look at both and I'm sure I'll end up with one of them!
