Knot Meter working?

Catalina 27 Burlingame
I have a Catalina 27 1982 with the original Knot Meter built in the bulkhead which currently doesn't work. I had my diver check the sending unit when he cleaned the boat, said he could not get the little propeller to turn and I might be able to service it from the inside. Does anyone have any experience with these sending units being replace while in the water?

My boat had to have a new thru hull fitting in order to have a new transducer installed..

what brand of knot meter is it?.... some of them are removable from inside the boat. you unscrew a lock ring and pull it out of the hull fitting, and then place a dummy plug or cork in the hole while you work on the impeller unit.... while switching it out you may get a couple of gallons of water in the bilge, but it will pump out.

it could be fouled with weeds, or a small twig.. or a barnacle....

Fixed Meter

I finally fixed my knot meter which was easier than I thought. I was more fearful of the water coming in the boat. When I pulled the sending unit out of the Hull, the water came gushing in. The Auto Bilge was able to pump out the amount of water coming in. I was able to stop the water with the palm of my hand very easily. I then put a rubber toilet flapper in the hole and stuck a screwdriver handle in it to keep it tight. In the mean time, I clean the wheel by popping out the shaft and removing all the growth around it and made sure it spun freely. I assemble the shaft back together and spun the wheel while checking the Knot Meter on mounted on the bulkhead, worked perfect! When installing back into the hole, I made sure of lining up in the same direction of the water flow of the boat. There is a hole on top of the plug that goes through horizontally, so when you wiggle the plug in, you know the direction of the wheel. Took the boat out yesterday, knot meter works perfect on my Catalina 27 '82. The only thing I might do is calibrate it with my GPS on my iPhone. There is an adjustment behind the knot meter. The nice thing is, I can just glance at the knot meter and see if my trimming of the sails improve the speed. One last thing, light sand and clean all the terminals to make sure good contact. I hope this helps others.:)
