The knot meter on my 1985 H31 works intermittently, I am wondering if anyone else has this problem and how you fixed it . Thanks.

Wheel Cleaning

Take a line and hang on to the ends, sea saw it back and forth from the bow, under the hull, back past the knot meter wheel. That usually cleans it and it works fine.

Wheel cleaning

The sensor is probably located in the forward compartment under the V berth. Obtain the plug for the hole first. There should be a large cotter pin holding the sensor in place. Remove the cotter pin. Rotate the sensor back and forth until it is loose. Remove the sensor and QUICKLY plug the hole. (If the hole is left open, your boat will sink!) The water that comes out of the hole will go into the bilge. Turn the sensor over to reveal the wheel. Scrape all the crud off and make sure the wheel turns freely. Reverse the process to replace the sensor. If you let your boat sit for more that a few weeks, you will probably have to repeat the process. Bottom pain does not help much, and may foul the wheel. Good luck.

Nope, I think its under the engine

On my former '84 H31, the speed and depth sensors were under the engine. On the newer models the speed is up front.

Transducer Paint

My 1981 27 is on the hard at the moment. The bottom was sanded and re-painted. My boatyard mentioned that they would use a "special" paint to keep the the depthmeter transducer from fouling. I plan to use some sparingly and with care on my knotwheel to keep the algae and barnacles off of it. "LOTUS" goes back in the water next week-end , so by mid-May I should know if my idea worked. Hey can't hurt. West Marine sells the stuff for $8.99 in a little white/blue bottle with a small brush attached to the cap. Good Sailing to you!

If wheel is Clean it could be

If the wheel is clean when you pull it try spinning the wheel by hand and see what the knot meter reads. Also last year the dealer preped the boat, for my new 2001 290 and they didn't do too good a job of painting, because 2/3's of the way thru the season my knot meter also stoped working. When I pulle the boat for the winter I found out that them missed painting the hull around then knot meter, so I had a 3 inch growth of barnacles blocking the water flow to the knot meter. This year I WILL do a better job of painting.
