Knock under the boat

I think I know the answer to this but I am going to ask those of you who are more experienced than I. Today I noticed underway at high power settings I was getting a knock particularly bad when I turned sounded like it came from the back of the boat. We stopped and got a slip about 3 hours from home so I could have time to look it over. I thought at first something must be around the prop, but in the slip, transmission in neutral the shaft tirns really easily. I grabbed the shaft coupling and found I can bang the driveshaft easily on the Stern tube in any direction. Jssalem says go hire a diver. What do you say?

Hello Ken Cross, Sounds a bit ominous if nothing is on the prop or shaft. What type of shaft seal do you have on the shaft and tube? Is water coming in from that hull tube area? Is the packing of the shaft in reasonable shape? Where is the shaft bushing...….. Is it at the tube or aft on a strut?

Thanks for the reply. I have a dripless PSS shaft seal. No water coming in.

We just had a diver look it over. The strut is broken off just below where it attaches to the boat. He said there was no indication of hitting something. It's just resting on the prop shaft. I plan to jury rigged my dinghy motor to push it into my slip after I sail home. The forecast is light in the am then south 0-10 in the afternoon changing to NW 5-15 in the evening. It's N Nw 15 miles to our slip so it will be a while.

Sorry to hear, Ken. Sounds like a good plan though. Safe journey and safer finale! :)

Sorry to hear of your problem, but glad to hear you have a plan to deal with the situation. Rigging the outboard and/or the dink have often crossed my mind in my "what if" thoughts. Towing your boat using the dink will not work. I tried that, and found myself swinging port and starboard in the dink as the tow line became tight. (No worries, my wife was at the sailboat's helm.) Pushing the sailboat by securing the dink to the aft port or starboard side of the sailboat might work. Is that called a Hip tow? Pushing from directly behind might work too. I often considered clamping the dink motor to the stern ladder. That would require step rungs that would be wide enough to secure the motor. Best Wishes for a successful docking.

It was such an enjoyable rendezvous at Poulsbo. Got some terrific images of your boat, which I’ll download later today.
I guess it just is inevitable you meet friends, have a good time, you head home. You try to keep up with the other boat, the boat breaks.
Ah boats. Just a place to throw money at the water.

If you do not have tow insurance it would be a convenient time to get it. You mentioned the knock was at high power setting; just take her into the slip at low power. Better yet, figure out where you are going to be hauling out and take her there.

Depending on the year, we offer the strut, initially it sounded like a loose shaft zinc:

Thanks Dave for the information. I tried to inquire from your store last night, but when I tried to submit the request it didn't go. I suspect I'll need to wait until I haul it to be able to identify the part for sure, but the one in the photo matches my memory. I won't be able to haul until late next week.

Great information, thanks. Now regarding the broken strut: a smooth feeling boat while underway. Haven't impacted anything to my knowledge. The diver said no evidence of an impact. Any theories why it broke? After it's on the hard I'll have a better look.

Very good question. We were near Rich Passage. The CG closed the passage to all traffic after we departed north thru Agate Passage. Then Ken discovers his boat is making a banging noise.
Coincidence?
