klunking centerboards

I've just acquired a Javelin. I'm very new to sailing and figured I would start with this. My question is- when she is headed into the wind, almost in irons, the centerboard seems to move from side to side-kind of klunking with the current or waves. Is this normal? I'd appreciate any input. Thanks,

klunking centerboard

centerboard trunks generally allow a little room to easy the board's travel up and down. Two things to consider. One is to make a rubber gasket == one strip of hard rubber material along each side of the trunk at the bottom. Usually need to screw a small strip of metal over it along the edge. This will often solve the problem and it makes the boat go faster as it is not scooping water up into the well as the boat travels along. A second thought if the gasket is in place and it is still klunking -- measure the distance of freedom on each side of the board from the flat surface of the board to the edge of the trunk; then cut a small disc about two inches in diameter that is the right thickness and glue to each side of the board; this will increase friction pulling it up but not all that much. Place the discs in a location where they will be just about at the keel when the board is down. However, for each you need to check the class rules to be sure they are "legal" adjustments. Or, be a pirate and cheat. I don't recall class rules. I too love the quiet of a good sail. Good Sailing, By
