I am in the process of applying Kwiw Grip to my Hunter 33.5. The existing non-skid is a stippled texture and very worn down. It is gray in color and I am using the white Kiwi Grip. You cannot see the gray through it.
We started out by wasing the existing non-skid with a solution of 1 cup of WISK detergent, 1/2 cup of TSP, and 1/2 cup of Bleach in a 2 gallon pail. That solution removes dirt, mold and oxidation.
Next step is to mask off the area, we used blue painters tape, a cup to get the corner radius, and a box cutter. Make sure the surface is totally dry or the tape will not stick. Be very careful using the box cutter to cut the tape for the corners, your do not want to score the gelcoat. We left a small gap between the non-skid and the gel coat. This visual helps with getting the tape straight and eliminates not covering all the non-skid with Kiwi Grip.
Once taped, we got the Kiwi Grip, a putty knife, a notched trowel and the Loopy Goopy 3" roller that comes with the paint. We got the paint from Jamestown Distribuors, they give you the Loopy Goopy sleeve with the paint but you need to buy the 3" handle to hold the Loopy Goopy sleeve. Paint is $140.00/gallon and around $20.00 for shipping.
so here we go.... Once you get the can open take your putty knife and blob the Kiwi Grip in different areas that have been taped off. For large areas don't blob it over the whole surface, you have time to do it in stages and it will not leave a start/stop line. Once it is blobbed on take your notched trowel and spread it all around, make sure you cover over the tape line. Next take your Loopy Goopy roller and begin to roll it out. Don't go to fast as it will splatter, you want to move slowly so as to remove any bubbles that may be trapped. The aggressiveness of the grip is dependant on how thick you trowlel the grip.
Once you get a section done, you can remove the tape right away. For the large areas the tape does not need to come off untill it is all done.
Be careful that you don't end up in a situation where you cannot reach the tape beause of the area you just covered. It happened to me.
It is best to apply with the sun out so it can begin to cure, by the next morning it will have set up and i recommend not to walk onit for a few days if possible. It will have fully cured by then.
Cleanup is a snap just hose off your putty knife and trowel and you are ready for the next time you need to apply.
I have s shot of the surface finished. i will get more pictures this weekend as we have a bit more to do. This stuff is great to work with and easy to apply.
