Kipor Generators

I was in your position last year considering which to buy and looked closely at the reviews, particularly those on the R/V/Camper sites, to see what comments owners had and decided to spend the extra on the Honda. The only real issue I found with the Kipor was regarding service problems but if you have someplace nearby that deals with these things, the $300 in savings might be a good bet.
I know there are some other Honda owners here but am also wondering if anyone has bought a Kipor.

My buddy Jay owns a remote camp in Northern Maine and he bought a small Honda knock off, I think, from Pep Boys. I don't remember the name but Kipor sounds very familiar. It lasted us two trips then crapped out. He then tried to find someone to repair it and after three weeks of searching someone in Ohio agreed to fix it and claimed they could get parts. The shipping was 1/2 the original cost of the generator and this was without a repair estimate... No one in NH would touch this generator nor could get parts...
It turned out to be a broken valve spring and Jay decided to repair it himself but after months & months of dealing with the "importer" he still had no parts and finally tossed it in the garbage. When it ran it seemed ok, though no where near as quiet as a Honda...
MAKE SURE YOU CAN GET PARTS AND LOCAL SERVICE!!!!!!!!!!

I doubt I will buy one. I would have had to hear great things about customer service and actual use to do it. I have asked on a few BB and so far have not heard anything to convince me to not get a Honda. The Hondas just seem to be bullet proof. I would rather cough up the extra $400 and get quality. If I heard people saying they are every bit as good as the Hondas, I would have.
I have heard great things about the Yamaha EF2400, aslo wondering if the extra 400 watts is worth the extra wirght of the Yamaha?
The Yamaha EF2400 is 20x16X18 and wieghs 70lbs. 53dba noise.
The Honda EU2000i is 20X11X16 and wieghs 45lbs. 59 dbs noise.
Is 400w worth 35 more pounds?

Kipor = China = Crap
Sorry to be so blunt but I see "Crap" from China in my business every week. It amazes me how many people buy this type of junk thinking they are actually saving money. It seems people are always wanting the cheapest item without any regard to quality or the availabilty of service. We just smile and say we don't work on that brand. We then suggest they take it back to where ever they purchased it. It was usually over the Internet or the side of the road somewhere.
I suppose it's the Wal-Mart mind set. The difference is that Wal-Mart used to refund your money when their Chinese junk broke. I think they are getting less liberal with their refund policies. I try not to buy stuff there either.

Well someone has to put in a postive for the Kipor. Yes I have the digital (Ti) 2000. No I havent had any problems with it. Yes I got it for 600 bucks. Yes one of the rubber feet tore and I got a replacement from a local RV dealer. Its light, fits in the lazarette. And made in China.... Look around from your zincs to your foulies. I dont like it but... Sure pay the extra, but the two generators are just about identical.
As a matter of fact, or strong unsubstantiated rumor, Honda is trying to get an injunction against Kipor because they say they copied the technology. Oh and Kipor is also manufacturing Honda generators, read cheap labor, but agreed not to sell them under the Kipor name. Hmmmmm. Looks like even Honda is trying to save a few bucks under this economy.

Just remember, buying the "cheap" version of a piece of equipment or tool generally is more expensive and more frustrating in the long run than buying the proper piece of gear to begin with. You usually have more problems with the "cheap" gear, and then end up throwing it out and getting what you should have gotten in the first place. I have rarely seen getting the "cheap" gear pay off.
