We just returned it because my wife bought it to read at the beach or on the boat. Couldn't see the screen in full daylight. We can with our ipad. She bought the paperwhite instead since it is for reading. I can't speak for software for the fire.
I do use my Google 7 with MX Mariner but mainly in the cabin because it's so hard to read in the sunlight
I use my IPad Mini with a Nuuid water tight cover, downloaded a free version of Navionics. Gives me static charts, positioning, speeds along with bouy markers, and you can create waypoints and markers. I had to research it well. In order for it to work, you have to get the built in GPS. You have to buy a WIFI and cellular capable unit. You do not have to buy a plan, but they will ask if you were to use it later on a cellular plan, which service provider would you most likely go with. No problem with sun glare.
I use my iPad. I put it in a gallon sized freezer ziplock bag (they are cheaper). Touch still works. I use Navionics, I have used others, but I like it the best. I only had problems with it in direct sunlight, but i wouldn't leave it or any device in direct sunlight.
