trying to replace the shut down cable on a 89 h 31...the cable runs from the panel on port side over to starb and then to engine..unable to get the new cable across the boat..any help out there????or should i just relocate the cable...then suggest where...thanks

I relocated mine!

Schafer:I relocated mine to the top of the engine compartment. The old one was part of the instrument panel and when we pulled the cable it was stressing the panel and caused it to crack. We moved it down below. Not as convient but also acts as a deterent to someone starting your engine when you are in a foreign port. You just pull it out and the engine will not start.

Use String

Removed mine for thorough lubrication and then reinstalled. Do with string. Tie mason's line (impossible to break) to the end of the cable at the engine end. Pull old cable out with string leaving string in engine compartment, working end exiting at panel. Lubricate cable and re-attach to sting. From engine compartment pull string and voila, cable routed back in.If you pulled the cable without a sounder your not SOL. Drop the fiber glass pan that covers the steering guts in the roof of the quater berth. (I think there are about 23,463 screws holding this up.) Detach the instrument panel from the wall of the cockpit. You should be able to run an electricians fish tape from the cockpit and pick up the end of it in the exposed roof of the quarter berth. Get a sting on it at this point and pull to the cockpit. From there its an easy route to the starboard lazerette through center bulkhead and then on to engine compartment. BTW: It helps if you drop the steering gear cover even if your pulling with string all the way through. Things get hung up as they twist and turn.Yesterday's Dream 1985 H31

Relocate it

Mine got broken durring a race and I relocated it next to the battery three way switch above the engine. It is kind of inconvienent but you won't get a sheet or foot breaking it again, or breaking the engine panel and having to replace it too.Good Luck.

May Be Cable-Tied Inside

Hi Shaefer, The control cable about which you speak passes from the back of the control panel, under the cockpit floor and it comes out through a hole in the centerline bulkhead in the lazarette (if it's like Endless Summer - 1983 h31). It passes through a hole under the pedestal where the steering cables, throttle and shift cables are also run. It may be that someone installed cable-ties somewhere to keep the control cables from getting tangled witht the steering cables. Good idea! If this is the case, you will have to either drop the steering gear cover in the aft cabin or do what I did. I took a reciprocating saw and enlarged the hold in the aft centerline bulkhead enough so I could see in there and get a special tool (knife taped to a stick) in there to cut the cable tie. The hole is not visible in the aft cabin, because it is covered by the steering gear cver. You might want to drop the steering gear cover just for the experience. Another idea - my pal Joe Turner owned h31 #1 and he said the big clumsy cover on that boat was hinged. Great idea! Good Luck. Roger Mummah
