Has anyone modified their original O'Day 26 rudder to low it to kick up ? I would like to back my 26 up to a beach. If so, how did you do it ?

EASY! remove the rudder and use the outboard to steer. Have someone wade ashore with a stern anchor first and you may be able to do it without risking outboard damage (winch her closer to the beach using that stern anchor and a jib-sheet winch.)
I did consider doing this task with a S cut in the rudder very much like you will see on a Helsen, Catalina, etc. I ended up making the decision to buy a custom made kick up rudder through Rudder Craft...best money I have spent on the boat along with my full boat Sunbrella cover.....though expensive it was worth it. If you are still working full time, like most of us do, your offtime is worth more than the savings you would gain from doing it yourself. I spoke to Joel Santarone and he also gave me a military discount.
