see "Key West Events", (left side) for calendar

If you've never been to KW, take the Conch Train ride. Sounds corny & touristy (and it is), but ... it IS informative and you'll get a good overview of KW and where things are, etc.
Of the bars, Irish Kevin's is always a good time
Too bad you won't be there in late Jan... for Key West Race Week... google it also.

It's a pretty small town, which means you'll get plenty of local advice on what to do... and not to do... If you're staying at a hotel the concierge will hook you up.. but if it were me I'd call someone over at J-World for input from another perspective.

I f I were you, I'd stay the first weekend NOT in Key West. Stay further up the keys. As someone siad, KW is pretty small, and I think you'd be able to do everything during the week, so I'd use Saturday and Sunday to explore the other places and things to do, like Islamorada, Marathon, some nice beaches, the Dolphin Experience, sport fishing...

Key west has any accommodation you'd want from a Motel 6 level on up.
I suggest you go on-line and check out your options and price ranges. We've stayed in two bedroom rentals at Duval Square, at the Truman Annex and individual weekly rentals; but have not gone the high end hotel route. You can probably get an individual room or suite by the night with Continental Breakfast and salt water pool at the Light House Inn and Suites on Whitehead Street opposite the Ernest Hemingway House.
If you are there for a week I'd suggest renting motor scooters to get around;and be sure to try the snorkeling at the beach in Zachery Taylor state park (bring your own gear). Visit the aquarium, Hemingway's house and Mallory square for the sunsets. Dozens of excellent restaurants... too many to name, but try Blue Heaven on Petronia Street, B.O's Fish wagon across from West Marine; Alonzo's, and Turtle Krawls at the waterfroont for local flavor. Check out Pelican Poop for gifts and see their interior garden where Hemingway had an apartment in his early days. Sloppy Joe's, Captain Tony's and Margueritaville are amongst the usual tourist bars. Any number of shops and art gallery's on Duval street...plus people watching everywhere.

There is a free shuttle from Key West to Bahia Honda and back. Make sure to take it or take some other form of transportation to Bahia Honda. We stayed there for two weeks. Great beach, great shore fishing under the old bridge, much much much less crowded. The picture for my avatar is my son and me at Pigeon Key, worth a trip also.

See if Mel Fisher's Museum is open. It's full of gold and silver and other artifacts from the Spanish Galleon Atocha. Also, the Pirate Museum complete with a Capt. Jack Sparrow impersonator

Rental bikes in Key West can be beat up rattle traps. What we usually do is catch a cab out to Kmart on RT 1 and buy two of these (mens' cruiser bike), one men's and one women's along with a cheapie basket. We pack a cable lock and a small adjustable wrench in our checked bags. I think assembly is something like $15/bike and you spend 10 minutes in the parking lot adjusting the seat and bars.

Now we have new bikes in good condition with brakes that work. :D

We let folks know at the B 'n B and at the bars we frequent that we're in town for two weeks and we're selling our brand new bikes for half price the morning we leave.

Our out of pocket is around $100/day for two bikes - half or less the cost of renting beaters - and the people who buy them are happy. We've done this a couple of times now and it's always worked like a charm. We usually have a buyer for the bikes by the third day in town.

FWIW we always stay in bed and breakfasts in Key West. A hotel just wouldn't feel the same.

We had saved enough airline miles and Hilton hotel points (all from credit card use over several years) for our family of 5 to spend a week in Key West last February. Besides the attractions, we chose Key West because it was the farthest south we could go in the US without requiring more miles than we had and because it is small enough that we did not need to rent a car. We are on a VERY tight budget.
This will probably bore you but FWIW here is a slide show of our trip:

Do NOT miss the Sunset Celebration at Mallory Square every evening.

It's the most fun you can have with your pants on.

Advice

[DON'T buy a thing unless its necessary!! Only beer and food.
The island is small enough to walk around.
Its only a week and you will be busy with sailing stuff. Cool your jets and come back another time for more sightseeing.
Yeah, Bahia Honda is great, if you camp there. The little Key Deer on Big Pine Key are more interesting.
Lots of pickpockets...just sayin...so stay in groups or just remember where your wallet is.
Panhandlers are everywhere...save your tips for the waiters and waitresses.
There are no bad areas of Key West during the day.

the fishing and diving are excellent, and the reason everyone started going to the keys in the first place. at least do a snorkel trip before you leave.

like the bike idea a lot...

If time allows, take the high speed ferry to the Dry Tortuga's. It's an all day trip, but one you won't regret.
