We're going to Key West next week, and we've decided not to tow our H26 with us. I'd like to bareboat charter a slightly larger (30-35') boat for a couple of days. Does anyone have experience with Key West charters, and/or boat recommendations? Thanks in Advance Tom Wootton

Southernmost Sailing charters mostly cats but has a couple of monohulls. What to do around KW ... sail out to the moorings at the reef sites, take a high speed cat trip to Dry Tortugas (presuming you don't have time to sail there), party in the evenings, drive up to MM35 and visit Bahia Honda SP, visit all the touristy stuff in KW.

Call Captain Joe

Never met him, but have talked to him on the phone. He arranges charters for the Boy Scout SeaBase in Islamorda. He seems to know a lot of people in the Keys. His web site is below. You can get his phone # there.

SouthernMost Sailing experience

We chartered with SouthernMost Sailing a couple of years ago. We showed up at their base in Key West for our charter of a Hunter 335 after a week of vacation on Marathon Island. The manager met us with a sad face and said he had been trying to get hold of us since Thursday to tell us that out prospective boat had been dismasted by a shrimp boat on Thursday. They offered and we accepted (for no additional charge) a PDQ 36 for the week. We were chartering with another couple. We sailed (sort of) out to the Marquesas(sp) Islands for a couple of days and then up to Big Pine Key for diving at Looe Key (SouthernMost was able to rent us dive gear - we're all cerified/able?). The PDQ 36 is like a floating condominium. Huge facilities and lots of room but doesn't sail hardly at all. Motors okay. We found the boat to be in average condition. Acceptable. The base people were helpful and went over all the systems with us. We had never sailed a cat larger than a Hobie and were glad to have the experience. Now we know and will continue to happily sail our Hunter 31. I would not hesitate to try SouthernMost Sailing again. They are not Moorings, but who is? Enjoy KW, we only had one night on Duval Street and had a ball. Thank God the highway back to Miami is four-lane divided. (Isn't it?)

More things to do in Key West

We were there for a few days this spring after sailing from Ft Myers via the Dry Tortugas. The Tortugas are definitely worth the trip. If you don't have the time to sail there (10 to 12 hours each way) take the day trip on one of the high-speed cats. I tried to stay away from the regular landlubber tourist spots, but there are some things that you should see at least once; the treasure museum, Duval St. at night and Mallory Square at sunset. Keep an eye out for the silver mime; he was the best of the street performers. A couple of classic schooners offer sunset cruises. "America" (a replica of the boat after which the America's Cup is named) was the most impressive, but they were talking about going north this summer so she may not be in port. I got a brief tour but didn't take the cruise. The Schooner Wharf Bar on the boardwalk is pretty good and it's full of sailors. To me, the music there was better than Sloppy Joe's or Rick's. For food, the Half Shell Raw Bar was good. It's on Margaret St near the waterfront. There is also a nice Jamaican place upstairs at the corner of Front St and Whitehead St. A local coffee shop at the corner of Margaret St and Caroline St serves great breakfast. I hope this helps. Have fun! Peter Irwin 46 "Fire
