Hi,

I have a Kenyon Kiss butane, original on a 260 Hunter. It will not stay lite. I read that it can be replaced or repaired and the price seems equal. What would the best avenue to persue? Considering all the problems with these stoves I am leaning toward a new stove. I want something that will fit the opening. Any suggestions are appreciated.

Thank you very much,

I upgraded from an H26 to the H 270 and I agree the Kenyon is very poor stove. Butane does not flow in colder northern climate and it is difficult / leaks when changing cans. The older Hunters have a great stove from Origo that runs on denatured alcohol. After one season with the Kenyon I ripped it out and put in an Origo double burner, they also have a single burner.
I had to cut my hole a bit bigger no big deal took about 20 minutes to lay it out and 10 minutes to cut it. Not sure about the size of the single burner see spec’s below. This non pressurised Alcohol stove is VERY Safe, easy and simple and yes it make take an extra minute to boil water but you’re a sailor so time is on your sideJ

This portable little stainless compact is ideal for even the smallest boats. Say good-bye to cold fare and get the maximum enjoyment out of your boating time. Burns pressure-free alcohol for maximum safety. SPECIFICATIONS - Power: 7000 BTUs (approx.). Type of Fuel: Denatured alcohol. Fuel Capacity: 1 qt. 8 1/2 ozs. (1.2 liters) per canister. Average Cooking Capacity: 6-8 hours for 1 qt. of water per filling. Boiling Time: 6-8 minutes for 1 qt. of water. Weight: 7 1/2 lbs. (3.375 kg) . Dimensions (HxWxD): 5 3/8" x 9 5/16" x 10 5/16" (137 x 236 x 262 mm) . With Optional Gimbal: 9" x 11 1/8" x 10 5/16" (229 x 282 x 262 mm).

I had the Origo single burner stove on our last boat and was very pleased with it.
I am still using the Kiss butane stove on our 260 and have never had a problem with it, if fact really like it.
For extended cruising it can be difficult to find the butane bottles so you must carry a dozen even with a propane BBQ and a microwave doing a good portion of the cooking load. If the butane is kept in the aft lazarette with the gas tank in salt water they will rust badly. I carry mine in the locker under the port cockpit seat, not an ideal location but so far no problems.

The butane is easy to light and much faster than the alcohol. If it does give any problems I will probably look at the alcohol stove as a replacement as I think installing a butane or propne stove yourself could cause insurance issues.
Please let us know what you decide and how you like the replacement.

Kenyon Stove

Our 1999 H260 has the same stove - it would NOT stay lit. I sent it back to the manufacturer with a check for $60 - the regulator was repaired and any expendable items (O-Rings, gaskets, etc) were replaced. Works like a new one. Very happy with it.
