My Brother Lost his Pickup Camper

My brother had a full sized truck with a camper. He took it to Alaska and we used it some while hunting. He doesn't know exactly what happened but he left the heater on while he went out to water the trees. When he looked back the camper was on fire and he lost the truck too. Everything was so burned they never figured out exactly what happened. The camper used a couple of propane tanks for heater and stove. He had just cooked breakfast and had a pot of coffee on a burner. On a boat at sea a simular situation could be deadly. I fear a fire more than anything else while at sea. The chances of sinking from hitting something seems far less likely and with weather forcasts the chances of getting caught in severe weather are small. So is it better to burn your boat with an alcohol stove or blow it up with propane??? When my wife went POOF the hatches were all open so no explosion. But if the hatches had been closed the POOF probably would have done some damage to the boat.

Go propane

Save yourself time, hassles & frustration. Go propane. When properly installed, it is safe. Will heat up any meal or hot water in no time. And as opposed to alcohol, propane gas does not generate humidity. In an already damped environment, it’s a plus. I had alcohol stove and pressurized alcohol stove on 3 different sailboats and propane gas stove on 2 others. Nothing beats propane. And a 5 pound tank goes a long way. Yvon

All fuel generates water

All carbon based fuel makes water and CO2 as endproducts. To burn propane each molecule of propane produces 3 molecules of CO2 and 4 molecules of H2O.

balance equation

It's all in the priming. If you prime a pressurized alcohol stove correctly, they actually work Ok, but really are kind of a pain in the..... Unpressurized alcohol (origo) is the safest, but don't get very hot, they're Ok for one pot stews and such. I'm not sure, but I think the white fuel is a little more volatile? Nice balanced equation from the chem. major!

Ok guys today I was messing around with this stove

again, I got the pump working better I`m getting pressure now. Preheating is alittle wild but getting used to that now. I`m getting good vapor and it lites up ,but its burning like a single blueist yellow flame,I was expecting the flame to look like the coleman`s or a propane`s flame when lit. burning out around in a circle. Is that the way the flame should look ? Why do they use these alcohol stoves in boats ,verses using a coleman stove with no preheating ? I think my coleman (white fuel) stove is much safer , then this crazy thing! Not sure what i`m going to do. I don`t think I want propane, thats just another tank get filled. I`m real close to mounting my coleman on top of the gimbel unit. Any sugestions. Thanks, chet

Good Question

The gas-fired stove is pretty dangerous on a boat because any fuel or fumes will settle in your bilge. Alcohol does not. The risk is flare-up. Alcohol is also extinguishable with plain water. Alcohol stoves burn with a blue flame, so you may be in good shape. If you pre-heat it properly, don't fill it when hot and maintain it, you should find it satisfactory. After all, it's the standard most of us used for over a half century. However, if it bothers you, my recommendation would be to go for an Origo non-pressurized stove. They come in both freestanding and drop-in models. Check e-bay from time to time. Here is a link for the drop-in. We used one for nine years and it was a great stove. Rick D.

That makes sence to me,of to why they use these alcohol stoves and not gas ones. Do those non pressuzied stoves work kind of like a zippo lighter ? burns like a single blue flame, kind of like those old streano cans for cooking with ? Thanks for the infor...chet

Chet, they work like a wick!

Chet: The Origo non-pressurized stoves work like a wick. You fill up the canister with alcohol. The canister has a batting type material which absorbs the alcohol. You just light the wick and they burn with a constant heat. The only real thing to worry about is refilling these when they are hot. Alcohol vaporizes at a very low temperature. I would also recommend one of these stoves/ovens. We have done a lot of cooking on our previous boat which had one of these units. They are not cheap, but there is not much that you will ever need to repair on one of these.

seadaddler !!!!

Im 60 years old, if that puts anything in perspective. I was born and raised in various places in East New York section. Moved out of Brooklyn in 1971 to Newburgh, NY. I was a real rebel, everyone knows that when you move out of Brooklyn, you move to Long Island. Then to really become a radical, when I left NY State, I moved to Arkansas instead of Florida. Im still undergoing counciling for that. My family is scattered all over Long Island and Florida. My sister used to own a restaurant in Smithtown.......Villagios, I think thats how you spell it. So, as they say in the south...."where you fom , boy?" Tony B

I also went to Catholic School and was also an alter boy. I was so angelic....up to age of 10 anyway. I also lived in Canarsie for 2 years as an adult. I think it was 85th St., dont remember for sure. There was an inlet/canal of sorts behind my Apt......Its the kinda stench you never forget. Most of my relatives are scattered around Miami and Ft lauderdale with few in Boca. I know you will love sailing in the south all year around.
