Some of us sail year round.....

but maybe I shouldn't even bring that up in this forum. For those that can't, well, they watch my sailing videos on You Tube to get their fix..... Ooooooh, this coming weekend looks good for a sail......sorry, I shouldn't have said that! Dick

Wow reading some of your

posts reminds me that it was once nice to be young with no job...;) Been futzing around on the boat sense November..as its been on the hard since then...We dont have the snow and frigid temps of you Midwest and north east boys but it has been a wet windy miserable winter...And I am getting bored with working on the boat...It will be April first for my launch so still a ways away. A few of the things Iv done 1) Bottom Paint 2) New Zincs and bonding plate 3) Sail repairs 4) New Head stay 5) Break down, Clean up grease thru hull valves 6) Replace main Halyard 7) Clean bilge 8) New spreader lights 9) Remount main bilge pump switch to lower position in bilge 10) Replace section of shower drain hose in bilge Still have to 1) Rebuild transmission 2) Fix two sole hatch cover brackets. 3) Bend on the sails As mentioned...Its burn out time and Im ready to go sailing...:(

A bit of everything

Our boat stays in the water year round waiting for the odd winter day when it's plausible to sail. The criteria for what constitutes a good sailing day go way down - there was sunshine and 10-15 knots of breeze on Sunday here, but it was about 47 degrees. So that was a great sailing day. Two weeks ago it was cloudy and about 45 degrees with 10 knots of breeze, so that turned into a decent sailing day, although a bit nippy. Otherwise, I read my sailing books, go to the boat show in January, have dinner with sailing friends and talk about the sailing we will do in the summer. I visit the boat every weekend or every two weeks to work on some small maintenance project, turn on the heat, hose off the grime, run the engine, and hang out. Usually I'll run into another guy from the humble yacht club I belong to and we talk about the Frostbite race series we are avoiding and the little projects...

Okay guys, where are the pictures of all these winter projects? There is a Photo/Project Forum you know-nothing new in a while. I think I'll watch Dixon's film...AGAIN!

Waiting for Spring...

While I wait for spring here in NJ, I also pray for a few dry days in that spring. I usually have a list of things to do on the boat before it goes to it's summer residence, but the few weeks before dragging her up there are often the busiest weeks of the year for me due to job obligations. I spend the cold weather days planning which items to do in the order of importance and sub-listed again in how many optimum climate days it will require. Paint or Work on teak will require warm and dry, but I'm not too keen on going out to build the slug slide gates in the mast if it's raining every day or still under 35 degrees.. One spring it rained and I was trapped in the cabin so frequently during the downpours that I was able to find all of the deck leaks that had plagued me for a couple of years... Fortunately, I've done nearly everything that I've wanted to modify on my current boat and can soon look forward to only preventative maintence and upkeep for the next decade until I retire and trade up when I move - those new Freedom boats look nice, but I'll have to wait until someone sells one used and I'll be able to afford it.

Sailing Online

sailonline.org I discovered this link and have sailed numerous races. Some as long as 400 miles. The races are very realistic and have as many as 400 other boats on the course. The tools to steer the boats are amazing. Wind speeds and shifts are shown. Weather forcasts for the course are available. The best part is, you don't have to be on the computer constantly. Just set the course and come back later. Actually, your computer doesn't even have to be on for your boat to keep sailing. Just log in and adjust your course anytime you want, but if you wait too long, you may end up on the beach....heh heh. I've done that. I've done okay, but haven't made the top 20 yet. Have fun.......

Seasons? we don't have no

stinkin' seasons! When I can't sail, I ride my motorcycle (well, except for this weekend cause it's supposed to rain off and on) but for the most part, it's a constant decision, sail, or ride, ride, or sail, what's a guy to do?

Well...

Since I have sailed every weekend of this month I'd say the difference from my winter and my summer habits is to put on more cloths in the winter. The average Texas winter day isn't really that cold so unless there is no wind or it is raining or freekishly cold, I go sailing. It helps to spend most of the week in such places as N. Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, and the likes to get a new perspective on how warm 55 really is. I really do feel sorry for you great lakes sailors in the winter with the lakes getting firm and the boats having to be pulled.

Keith, WOW,

Thats my life! Sailing 6 months, hockey 12 months. So happy to see that I'm not the only one! Funny how, as much as I love hockey, I cant wait to put the boat in the water, and stare up at the stars!
