Keeping Non-Skid Areas Clean

I've figured out several ways to remove stains/marks from (white) non-skid textured gelcoat, but what can I do in lieu of wax to make cleaning easier or less necessary in the future? [I accidently posted this as a reply to another message previously]

There has been much discussion of this subject available in the archives. Lots of people like the Island Girl products available here on the HOW.

Non Skid Care

John, I have a 1988 H33.5. I recently read on HOW that Future floor care products was being used to "seal" non skid with nice results. I pressure washed my deck about three months ago and applied Future to two areas to test the results. One area is doing great--the area has a sealed appearance and is easy to maintain. The finish is not glossy; therefore, eliminating reflection that can cause eye fatigue. Also, I do not notice any reduction in the nonskid / gripping characteristic when wet. On the second area, I applied Future a little too thick and noticed some discoloration where the liquid pooled. I will remove it with an amonia solution and reseal it. In reading the application instructions, I noted that Future is not a wax, but a floor sealer. The results look promising so far, I think that I am going to wait until the Spring to further evaluate before applying it to the entire deck nonskid. This stuff seams to work great and is very inexpensive.

Thanks for the info Dave.

I'm thinking of a little Future application as well.

Non-Skid polish

Some months back, Practical Sailor did a review of a non-skid polish and they thought it was pretty good and it RETAINED the the existing traction. I bought it and applied it during spring fitting out before launching. It is Aurora Sure Step non-skid deck polish. made by Aurora in Toranto, canada, but available at Boaters World. I am very pleased with it so far. Dick S/V Puffin

Non-skid sealants

Aurora and Future are, to the best of my knowledge acrylics based upon the "non-wax" floor polishes. Island Girl is presently developing some alternative formulations based upon a resin formula that does not appreciably change the look of the non-skid and can also be used on wooden decks and cannot yellow, peel or (as reported by one customer for the Sure step) go chalky. I am looking for a few critical people (no more than 20) to beta test these these formulations. This will be announced in the next few weeks via this web site. Existing customers will receive priority and final versions of the product will be provided to the "beta testers" at not charge. Jim W

I'll volunteer, my non-skid paint needs protection

I cleaned off the chalking paint's top layer with I.G. "pink", but I'm already noticing areas of spotty discoloration due to strong Summer UV exposure, (not to mention crap from the constantly overflying airliners...) Thanks! gecco@mediaone.net

Thanks George

Thanks for the Plug using the pink on painted non-skid is a first. I would be glad to add you to the beta testing because I would like at least 4 of each type of non-skid (painted/grit) gelcoat cross-hatch and gelcoat dimpled) Thanks Jim W

Jim, count me in.

Jim: Count me in on the beta testing. We are in the California delta and get a tremendous amount of dirt in the non-skid from the farming that is done in the area. Steve Dion steve@sdcsoftware.com

I'd like to beta test too

I've got a 1983 Catalina 30, with non-skid decks. Count me in!

Beta Test

Jim, I have an 88 H33.5 that is in need of a sealant to protect and enhance the non skid deck. We get a lot of sun exposure in south LA, that really affects gelcoat. I would certainly volunteer to test your product if you need additional test subjects. Thanks, David "SouthWind" E mail: HovTwo97@aol.com
