From what I have been able to tell, whether the head is being used is not an issue on anything less than a 50 foot boat. It's pretty hard to lose track of anyone on a 35 foot sailboat. Now those 4 head charter cats . . . . .

yep.... but in the case of the party charters, one should install a full on "head central" control station.... with green, yellow, and red lights... red light means its occupied, yellow light means danger, toxic clouds in there, and the green light means its all clear and unoccupied..
and you need bells so every time a head comes available, the bell chimes and the green light flashes for which one it is (and hope you get to it before someone else)....
and... if by chance you notice someone missing from the group, you can just check the control station to see if they may be in the head before calling search and rescue for the likely MOB situation.... and you would probably want to install the optional moisture meters and sirens to inform you when some lubber is NOT setting down when trying to pee in the bowl... or maybe they just had a strong desire to try a bit of chumming in the bowl, due to mal-de-mer/alcohol poisoning, but missed and "chummed" the walls and floor.... but either way everyone should know so the offender can be teased/ridiculed/shamed/laughed at, or whatever else it takes to get them to clean up their mess :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

Used this brass ball catch from Rockler.com. Mounted the "post" on the about four inches up on the base of the head door. The retainer pice went on the battery settee wall. Never have noticed with shins - retainer thin enough to be under cushion overlap & when the door is closed, the post is next to the engine cover.

Aside from boat show, never have been on one of those things, but the idea of a load of spring breakers on a 42 foot boat provisioned primarily with alcohol and equipped with 4 heads is simply to frightening to contemplate. The french charter captain who sold me some AGM batteries told me how he dropped such a group off in Curacao and left them there.

This is the head door latch in my boat. I'm not the original owner, but I thought this was OEM.
