Keeping cool

A question. Here in Texas this time of year, the night time temperatures can stay almost up into the 90s (at least mid to high 80s). This doesn't bother me much since I'm used to it; but the admiral has announced that she won't be sleeping on board unless I can figure out a way to cool it down. What do other people do in similar situations? Portable fans (at least the ones I've used) just don't provide the needed circulation.

Way back before A/C we used to........

Soak our sheets before bed. Sound bad, but it really worked great. Evap keeps you cool till you drift off. Of course, we were sleeping on the screened porch in the summer. Nobody does that any more. Greg

Depends where you are!

Mark: If you are at the dock you have several options. 1. Includes installing permanent A/C. 2. Get one of the portable units that slip into the hatches. 3. Jury rig a small home type window unit. 4. There are also some roll around units that can be purchased that just use a large hose (clothes dryer type) to vent the hot air to the outside. 5. A/C fans placed strategicly around the boat. If you are away from the dock: 1. High capacity Hella fans work good. These are about $40 or so but work pretty good. You will probably need to wire some DC recepticals around the boat for these to be plugged in. 2. "SOAK YOU SHEETS IN WATER", then you do not realize that you are sweating.

Cool Sheets

I'm not that old, but I agree with Greg. Back as a poor college student, living in an apartment with no A/C, my wife and I used to soak our sheets in cold water and wring them out before bed. When we first heard of the idea, it seemed crazy, but it works. It's just the initial shock of cold that takes a second to get used to.

Not OLD OLD but did sort of grow up on the poor side of town (so-to-speak). Didn't notice until much later.

Cheap AC Solution

My solution is a light weight 50 lb portable (easy carry handle)window air conditioner made by white westinghouse available at Best Buy 7,000 BTU for oly $300 really works great! Made an insulated canvas hatch cover and strapped a wood board with wheels to bottom of AC, simply roll the AC back to use hatch) Cools down our H-34 to 65 at night works ok in the hotter part of the day. No thru hulls, no ducts, no hard installation, just cool man! We ususally plan to sleep at anchor only in the winter/early spring and fall season when its cool overnight
