keeping cabin floors clean?

Hi. i have scrubbed the cabin floor today. The grain of the floor seemed to helped the dirt getting trapped easily. The color is also very bright to show any imperfections. I have few blemishes here and there. I am debating if i should lay a carpet over it.

I use black (recycled) rubber floor mats.

Very easy to clean, non slip, waterproof....--

It's a constant battle. It takes three days at sea, cleaning the boat every day, to get most of the land off of her. Even still, we usually use a beach towel as a floor mat in the cockpit. It's astonishing how boats can get dirty even when you're miles from land. One time I looked up and realized I had been tracking grease - I mean petroleum grease, like from a grease gun - all over the deck. Man was I furious. To this day, I have no idea where it came from. It must have fallen from the sky, because I damn sure didn't have a grease gun on board. If you use carpet, just make absolutely certain it can't slide around when you're heeled over. Good way to get a concussion or loose some teeth. We've always done okay with with beach towels, which of course have many other uses as well. We carry six or eight on board at all times.

Operators are always squirting grease into boat lifts, which in turn drops little grease turds around the yard??Sent from my iPhone

Hallberg Rassy uses carpets. They are held down with some press tabs (or whatever they are called) like often used on a dodger. Don't use indoor/outdoor carpet as you need a carpet that can breathe. A good commercial, tight burber style would work. And it should be bound. One advantage of a carpet is that it will hold the hatch boards in place (unless you already put hasps of some sort on them -- and they shouldn't be just held down by gravity). And when the carpet is dirty, just take it out and steam clean it.The marina I had my boats at (North of Seattle) were close to a rail switching yard - the smoke from the trains stained the decks all the time (I hated to think what it did to my lungs!). I found a similar problem in San Diego as the marina is below the airport landing path. One of the $100 power washers )you can get at any big box hardware store) worked great to clean the decks and didn't harm the fiberglass in the least. They are relatively small and can be left in the boat. If I needed more than just the water pressure, I often used Simple Green as a cleaner as it is environmentally friendly.

At the dock or anchor, we use a oriental wool runner rug that fits the floor almost perfectly. When sailing, we roll it up.Recently, someone gave me a cloth-non slip yoga mat. It makes a great mat to put in my truck bed to keep things from sliding around. It might work on the floor of a boat as well. tg From: "gene_neill@... I'll begin by saying that I'm a mathematician, not a mechanic so my competence in engine maintenance (such as it is) is from reading books and getting my hands dirty on my Vega's old MD6A.

That said, when i fit a new water pump impeller I find it tricky to get the shaft to slide back in to the housing. In previous years I rotated the flywheel by hand slightly until the shaft slid in.(I know that there is a key that has to engage before the shaft can slide back in. The MD6 manual doesn't have much to say on this.)Don't laugh but last weekend when i fitted a new impeller I decompressed the engine (with ignition off) and cranked the flywheel with the starting handle with my right hand and gently pushed the shaft (with new impeller fitted of course) in
with left hand.

It slid back in very easily. No need for cable ties to compress the impeller splines.
When I told a friend who has the same engine (not a Vega though) he laughed and said "why didn't you rotate the new impeller (and the shaft) slightly with a long nosed pliers while pushing gently? Easier!"
Was the bar steward right? (I expect that he was as he is a truck mechanic.)

I put carpet down on Lyric when I lived aboard. I went to a carpet store and told the salesman I wanted to do my home in wall to wall carpet. I swear I could see the dollar signs in his eyes as he asked me if I knew how many yards I'd need. I replied, about
3, do you have a runner? I used indoor/outdoor carpet and rolled it up when we were sailing. It does get dirty but it was simple enough to shake it out and if need be could be hosed down on the dock. At the dock or anchor, we use a oriental wool runner rug that fits the floor almost perfectly.
When sailing, we roll it up.
Recently, someone gave me a cloth-non slip yoga mat. It makes a great mat to put in my truck bed to keep things from sliding around.
It might work on the floor of a boat as well. tg

It's a constant battle. It takes three days at sea, cleaning the boat every day, to get
most of the land off of her. Even still, we usually use a beach towel as a floor mat in the cockpit. It's astonishing how boats can get dirty even when you're miles from land. One time I looked up and realized I had been tracking grease - I mean
petroleum grease, like from a grease gun - all over the deck. Man was I furious. To this day, I have no idea where it came from. It must have fallen from the sky, because I damn sure didn't have a
grease gun on board.

If you use carpet, just make absolutely certain it can't slide around when you're heeled over. Good way to get a concussion or loose some teeth. We've always done okay with with beach towels, which of course have many other uses as well. We carry six or eight
on board at all times.

thank you for all comments. Now i am aware that the carpet shouldn't move under your feet. i 'll take that into consideration if i go with the carpet. Interesting to hear that the little lids for the battery compartments on the floor expected to be hinged or secured somehow. i thought gravity should take of it. Any personal experience? is that a common practice to do so. Actually the danger of stepping in one of those holes and finding out the the lid is not there is scary(broken leg. ouuch!)

The reason to fastened down the lids is to help prevent what is under them from flying about the cabin if the boat flips or severely rolls. The batteries should probably be strapped down anyway.Lake sailors probably don't have to worry about these things;)Tim
