Today a new lister called me about a sail trim problem, which we handled. He then told me some of my explanations are too simple to be true and that he can't believe them to be correct because sail trim is complicated!! I honestly did not know how to respond and just ignored the statement. After the call I started thinking about his comment and things started coming back to me as to how I got into the sail trim business in the first place. When I got back into sailing a number of years ago I though I'd never get it. Sailing friends tried to explain it to me but they used scientific details and endless verbiage and I just could not get it. All I wanted to know was what trim is needed for a particular wind condition and point of sail and what sail trim controls do I use to achieve it. I was getting the techniques in bits and pieces, which was not working for me. and finally decided to figure it out myself. What I found, when the sail trim light finally went on, was that sail trim is an acquired art like hitting a baseball, golf ball, kicking a soccer ball or riding a bike. Sail trim is simple to learn and understand ONLY when presented in an easy to understand fashion. Sooo, if yor a beginner that likes scientific and intrircate details this sitemay not be for you.
