What's your opinion of wing keel vs. retractable keel. Looking at several C-22's nearby. thanks!

How will you use the boat?

I have a 1980 C22 with the swing keel. I launch my boat each time we sail. The swing keel requires less water to launch in. If you will leave your boat in the water then either type will do. We also like to race our boat and I can race in any C22 one class group with the swing keel. Additionally, we camp out alot with our boat and by raising the keel and rudder we can beach anywhere. If I mainly just wanted to sail and moored or docked my boat then I'd jump all over a wing keel. The wing keel has basically no ongoing maintinance vs. the swing keel and that can mean alot. No matter which boat you choose, a C22 is a very good choice. Ray

Maintenance

Ray did a good job answering the question. I have a fixed fin keel C22. I launch once in the spring and take it out in the fall. For me the fixed keel means no maintenance. If you check the forums and archives you will see that the swing keel does require maintenance. It is easier to launch, though, and that is its prime advantage along with the beaching thing. You'll love either C22, they are great boats!
