I have just purchased a 1972 C22. So far I love the boat, however I get a little nervous when the boat begins to keel. Will my 22 ever go over? I usually sail on Muskegon Lake or Lake Michigan. This is usually in less then 15 knot winds. Please let me know.

You mean Heeling??

I have had my rub rails under water on a lake here in billings. It hasn't gone over sofar. I do make sure my keel is locked down tight so if I did it won't break through the keel trunk. If the wind is too strong make sure your keel is locked and your hatch boards are in place.

Heeling in a Catalina 22

I had a knock down when I first learnd to sail in my '75 Catalina 22 in 1975 on Pensacola Bay. I was by myself and had the main in the cam and jib cleated. I know..... Anyway, a monster gust came from no where and the boat went straight over with me trying to unsheet and not fall over at the same time. I can remember standing on the inside of the stbd seat jerking on the main sheet. The spreader almost/or hit the water and the main was getting wet, I remember unsheeting the main and the gust passing and the boat plopping back down. I shudder to think of what might have happened if the keel had not been locked down. It was all a blur, but it definately gave me confidence in the boats ability to come back and me a lesson in in experienced single handing do's and don'ts. Ken

They're pretty good at saving sailors

I failed to get the mainsheet out of the cleat while closed hauled in about 20 knot winds: three of us were standing upright on the side of the leeward seat, the boat rounded up into the wind in irons, and away we went. It looked like a catastrophe from shore, we were told. We raced it with full sail plan in 20 knots plus and got 6's and 7's out of it all the way, rail down. Believe me, coming from a dinghy, there was no one more surprized than me. Suggestion. Pay attention to the rake of the mast so it points well, Halyard crosses the boom 7 inches aft of the edge of the mast, when sitting on her lines. That will take alot of wildness out of the boat.
