I went on this same quest recently with my 78 M22. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the original was made by Dutton-Lainson. It's a "brake winch" in that it has an internal clutch so it won't go freewheeling when you drop the keel: you crank it up and down.

A link I found brought me to Northern Tool, and I was of the opinion that the 800 pound-rated winch would work. I'd have bought it except they wouldn't ship to Hawaii.

If you're on the mainland, this may be just what you're looking for. But remember, I'm a very new Mac owner and might be wrong.

Mac 21 Keel Winch

This is a really interesting subject for me. I just purchased an old 1976 Mac Venture 21. The keel winch on the boat was a DL winch, but it was not a brake winch, just a ratcheting winch. I don't know that this was the original winch that came with the boat but my guess is that it was. Having owned other swing keel boats I realized that this was a safety hazard. I went to Northern Tools and ordered a new DL brake winch. I opted for the 1,200# model based on a recommendation from a friend who also has a Mac 21. I wish that I had ordered the 800# model. The new winch that I installed works wonderfully, but, it is almost too big for the boat. The winch handle barely clears the sole of the cockpit.

Steve, just cut the handle down, problem solved. Or use the old handle.

i had to cut a few inches off the original winch to get it to clear my knuckles.
