A few days ago I left a post on "ask all sailors" if anyone had applied the Keel Guards/Shields that I had seen in various mag ads.........not one reply. Does that mean that not one member of our sailing groups had every tried/installed it? How, or why do they sell it? Is it only for the Power Boat people?

Works for me

It works great on my 26X. We often beach it for overnight camping. The keel guard eliminates the "normal" scratches. They are also extremely easy to apply.

Keel Shield

Did you apply it yourself? How did you lift the boat? Did you go all the way to the centerboad well? I'm not to interested is speed, so don't mind if it slows the boat some. I beach in the lakes but not the ocean for obvious reasons. I've seen a lot of scratches/gouges on other's keels, they said came from hitting the trailer cross bars, etc, which I was looking to avoid. Thanks guys for the feedback.

DIY

I installed it myself. The keel guard comes with everything you'll need except the alcohol to clean the hull. I installed mine from the bow-eye back to where the hull straightens out. If you follow the instructions exactly, it is pretty easy. I used my 15 y/o daughter to help make sure I had it straight. Good luck.

pvc for trailer

FYI, I have used pvc pile for years on skiff trailers. My 88 mac & trailer doesnt have any problems hitting the trailer, but if your does, try wiring, or drilling some pvc, in front of the cross bar. on my last 20' skiff, I drilled the 2 ends to the sides of the trailer, then bowed the center down to just below the roller. this way, if the is off center, the pvc guides the boat towards the rollers, and it cant hit the metal.
