Keel separation

I have a bit of keel separation between the Hull and keel. The separation is on the front of the keel approx. a 1/16 of an inch. I talked to someone at a marina and they didn't think much about it. Anyone have any advice? Responses appreciated in advance. Thanks, M.C.

Such a small gap might just be missing fairing compound - requiring repair to prevent water intrusion - but not indicating structural damage. Have you any reason to suspect actual separation?

Keel sep.

I just bought this boat, however, I don't see any damage to the keel which would indicate a hit.

It's quite common to have "some" minimal separation of the keel from the keel stub due to the lateral forces on the keel when the boat is sailing. The acceptable amount is in the eye of the beholder, but it would appear that all you need do is fill the 1/16-inch crack, fair it , bottom paint it. Some people prefer rigid fillers, like MarineTex, while others prefer flexible caulk like 3M5200. Either way, you will probably need to add this to your annual list of spring maintenance chores. But it's also a good idea to make sure that no sea water is getting into your keel bolts. If it is that's a whole other ball game. If you are in salt water, dip your finger into the bilge now and then and taste the water. Salty? I hope not....

Mark, I can't remember what you are driving

But that gap is standard equipment on every Hunter 34 I've ever seen. All that you have to do is squeeze any good polyurethane (5200) into the gap and then trowel it flush. Of course, the gap has to be clean. I last did mine 13 years ago. Still perfect. Can I suggest a separate lightening ground after you seal up the keel?
