Keel saga part 3 (final post)

After not having access to the crane yesterday, we got it this morning and pulled the hull off. The homemade mold release of packing tape worked pretty well but didn't wanna come off the hull without some diligent scraping. Once we got separation, they hung the boat off to the side while I did some last minute fairing.



After fairing the epoxy edges even with the keel top, I took to cleaning the bolt threads.





After which, we all jumped in with caulking guns to apply the 4200. Big circular mounds were laid up at the base of the bolts and more was applied by hand up the bolts to where it had been before.



Once this was done, we set her back on the keel, holding some weight while the boys tightened bolts. After they were manually tight, we let off weight and repeated with 100 Lbs of torque. Then we came off all of the weight and the final torque settings were applied. While the torqueing was going on, I was busy getting 4200 all over me while I shaved the excess off with a spreader.

So, the keel is done and now it's on to bottom paint and a compound/wax job. I don't have the parts for the water heater R&R yet so hopefully, that's next week. We have a hard date of the 23rd.

BTW, I still haven't gotten my videos but will this weekend.

You have really made me appreciate my shallow draft monolithic keel! That is one project I don't won’t to tackle.

I think I would rather

Be doing my rudder than that keel project. However, at least your getting paid for your labor, and mine is all without pay. Am curious why you used 4200 as a sealer, instead of 5200.

Bob, actually, they lined up easily.

Nice N Easy, We decided on 4200 because it retains it's pliability much longer than 5200 and it's primary purpose is as a sealer, not as an adhesive. Those 10 bolts rated at 12,000 Lbs. each, do the adhesive work well enough.

How close are you to Cap Sante Marina? We're going to be hauling Verboten up there around the 29th for our first cruise in the San Juans. If you're within walking distance maybe I'll swing by and say hi.

We're in Bellingham, about 30 miles away at The Landing at Colony Wharf. Too far to walk from Cap Sante but a 5 minute walk from Squalicum Marina in Bellingham. Squalicum is a very nice, large marina with restaurants and shops, both marine and otherwise. I think there's one restaurant at Cap Sante but several in town (Anacortes). Launching from Cap Sante for the San Juans is cool. I used to launch my V-21 at Washington Park at the other end of the islands for sails into the islands. It worked for a swing keel boat.

Hah, no, I don't think I'll be walking to Bellingham and it's a long drive from here too!

I thought about launching at Washington Park but decided that I really don't want to put my trailer in salt water.
