My 1990 Hunter 33.5 suffered damage in Hurricane Frances and the boat yard is removing the keel to repair some minor damage to the stub where the keel is attached. The cast iron keel has several areas that continuously rust right through the bottom paint within months of a new bottom job. I am considering grinding the trouble areas and treating it with Ospho. This is a rust inhibitor that attacks the rust and converts it to a hard coating that's suppose to retard the rust. I'm planning to apply a metal primer coat before the final bottom coat. Anybody have any experience with Ospho treated keels and it's durability underwater?

it helps and will delay rust for two seasons in fresh water. you are better off sand blasting the keel and coating with epoxy(within an hour). Grinding does not remove all the rust so it will return. your chemical will delay the return but RUST NEVER SLEEPS

Question about rust *!
I bought my 1990 33.5 last year, and also have rust on the keel. It was too late before spring launch to do much, so I just painted with VC-17 and launched. My question is: If the boat is in fresh water, does the rust get any worse? I thought rust needed air to spread. In the water the amount of air would seem to be low to me. Any experts on rust out there?

had my entire bottom sand blasted
I had the entire bottom and keel sandblasted on my H-31. I then coated it with, 1 coat of Interlux's barrier protect. I then faired in the pits (some the size of golf balls) with Interlux's "Watertite" and coated with 5 more coats of barrier protect. I don't plan to have it hauled until spring 06, so I won't be able to let you know how it worked until then. Sandblasting was $600.00 for the whole bottom. Jim

Ken, Rust in fresh water
I'm not a chemist but I see lots of rusty chains and mooring anchors come out of the lake every year. I also saw rust reappear on my Hunter keel so it's safe to assume rust never sleeps, even in fresh water
