Hello All, I have finally gotten out to my boat to repaint the bottom and noted what appeared to be surface rust areas on the keel. Taking out my grinder I set about removing the rust for primer. I found that the rust was quite deep in areas and am quite concerned as the bottom of the keel is all rusty. I can't seee any coating staying on the bottom of the keel very long but am worried about the depth of the rust there. What do other do with this? Thnaks for the help, Matt Forked River, NJ

Do it Corrector do it Often

Proper method would be to sand blast the iron and seal it with epoxy within a hour. If you decide to grind it and treat with paint or chemicals plan on doing it every time you haul it

What damage will keel rust do? *!

I also had some rust on my H33.5 keel. I was going to treat it with Rust-Oleum but ran out of time before launch, so just scraped and covered with VC-17 bottom paint. The bottom of the wing keel looked pretty bad, but no way to do a good job on that while on the cradle. What will happen if the rust isn't treated? Doesn't rust need air to get worse? If the boat is in the water what happens to the rust? There must be some experts out there to answer these questions.

rust damage

Ken, the rust will contine to come back unless you get down to bare metal and then treat. Must grind to raw metal and coat with an epoxy before painting. Not sure about rust-olum products for underwater use however I did not know that they make a anti fowling paint, never have seen to available for sale, interesting.Metal will rust in water as there is oxygen in water (h2o) rust will come back under paint if it was not cleaned out entirely. Also you need to treat bare metal right away, I seem to remember there is only a one hour time limit.best to work in smaller section and treat. At any rate you will need to take care of this sooner or later (better sooner) If the boat is in the water already you will have a fall/spring project of next year. You could also have the keel sand blasted and primed professionaly for you, save your back and arms.I not an expert but this is based on experience.

Check the archives...but you can let it rust

Went through this last year---Hunter's are notorious for rust with iron keels. Yes, you can sand blast, or grind and epoxy seal, which I did. On the other hand, you can bottom paint, and wait 500 years for enough rust to occur to make a difference.... Also, remember that oxidation needs oxygen to occur... It doesn't look so bad when you first lift the boat out, but the longer it is out, the more rust you will see as air gets to it...

I haven't tried this but it looked very interesting and I am going to try it when I do the keel on my restoration of my RHodes 19. Run a web search for POR 15. Later Ed
