Keel Repairs

I have a vintage boat 1975 with a cast Iron keel that was covered with a coating of fiberglass,
when the boat was built. Over the years a bit of the fiberglass would chip off and I would
sand the area and put a one part Pettit rust inhibitor on the area and bottom paint over it.
Ive owned the boat for 13 years and that always did the trick, Up until this year, when an area of about one foot square peeled off on one side of the keel and two small areas on the other side peeled off. Anyone have any Ideas on how to fix this?

Take a grinder with a wire wheel, and clean the ever loving dog crap out of where it has delaminated, (on the cast iron), then cover it with West System 105, (you know, after cleaning it up with acetone, etc, blah blah), and you'll never worry it again. Maine Sail is fond of saying, "Nothing is forever, but 5200 is forever". Well, W.S. epoxy tends to be forever as well. Unless you run it over Dead Man's Reef at 5 knots, it ain't coming off..

If you want to get back to what it was, just wire brush & sand the areas of peel off and apply Pettit Rust-Lok (2 coats), then 4 layers of Barrier coat, and follow that with West Systems and fiberglass mat in multiple layers to build it up to the level of the other Fiberglass.

Or you could strip the whole keel down to the Iron, apply Pettit Rust-Lok (2 coats), then Interlux Barrier coat (4 coats), followed by your anti-fouling paint. More work but a better long term solution.
