From a discussion on the Mac only forum - several questions arise. Issue: The fibreglass covering on the cast iron keel of a Mac/Venture 22 has become too old and needs to be repaired. Question: Can I strip off the old fibreglass, sand blast the iron keel and cover it with something other than more fibreglass? Will epoxy, polyurethane, powder coating or some other product provide good coverage and protection? Or am I destined to re-apply fibreglass? Can this be a good Do-It-Yourself winter project OR is the 600 lb iron keel too much to wrestle with and a marina/boatyard job is in order? NOTE: This is a fresh water boat and in all likelyhood will always be in fresh water. If this topic has been bashed around ad nausium before, please forgive me, I couldn't seem to find anything in the archives. Richard Thanks

not really

just redoing to glass would be best and save you lots of pain in the butt maintance. If you clean the cast iron. plan to coat it with foz, and acid wash that turns it black. them . do that immedaitaly cause the rust will come back overnight. I thing i would use west system and put glass and epoxy on it.
