What halppened to Bilbo's posts? Too long? Or, someone did not them?
I wrote to ask Phil about this on the "Site Talk" board and he restored the posts. He was not sure why they went 'poof'. Apologies to Bilbo if he intended them to be deleted.

While I respect Maine Sail's opinion, I disagree with him on keeping the Catalina 22 swing keel up while in a slip. If you raise the keel so it's hanging on the cable while on the trailer you'll see it wobbles like crazy. The keel pin will wear the keel fast. I'd like to know if the C22 they repaired had the cable break letting the raised keel slam forward and damage the keel trunk on the boat the yard repaired. This is the usual thing that happens to the truck on the swing keel C22.
No, most all of these were trunk sides as was the C-22, not from the cable snapping. We did repair an O'day Mariner that the cable snapped on and punctured a pin hole in the fore edge of the CB trunk, but most all repairs were to CB trunk sides not the leading edge of the trunk. In almost all cases the boats had sunk as a result of damage. In a few instances owners caught it as a small weep first but most found their boats on the bottom. If you have a CB boat periodic inspection of the cable and replacement is a good practices because these can fail too.. If you think it wobbles like crazy up you should should see what this can do with a 5' lever point loading the trunk to only the width of the CB, rather than along its entire raised length.. I have physically watched and listened to CB slam on certain boats and watched as the trunk flexed near the pin.

As I said before you guys can do what you want. Having worked in a yard that did a lot of these repairs when owners left the CB's down. I know my protocol for CB boats and just wanted to share my reasoning and experience.

Beyond all my own recommendations Catalina has always recommended raising the swing keel after a day of sailing, IIRC, and at least monthly cable inspections. Their advice included wording about getting the stainless cable OUT of the water so it can last longer. The biggest problem I have seen with the C-22 on the ocean is the dissimilar metals in the CB mechanism, steel, brass, bronze and stainless to name a few.

Maine Sail,
Your dead on, on saltwater. I've see one keel where the pin literally dissolved it's way through the keel, the keel then fell off the boat.

My old boat stayed in a slip for twenty years, keel down all the time, never had a problem it still has a solid keel and the pinhole looks like a new keel. It did however have both -0- movement hanger brackets and the alignment pads added to the front sides of the keel to keep it centered and movement free.

Not sure if it's still there, but at one time Catalina advised not to moor the C22 swing keel in salt water. You are once again dead on the mixture of metals.

Then there is that issue of two boats side by side, one will have no trouble while the other has lots.

Like you, I've seen much damage on the boats. I changed the cable every two years, most of the old cables looked new when removed. But they just don't cost that much, and good preventive maintenance is always a good habit.

A better choice for those mooring in saltwater might be to consider a wing.

I appreciate your posting and hope you will continue to chime in on this forum, nothing beats real time experience. I tell new owners all the time, nothing beats "tiller time" :)

Probably off-topic, but Bilbo's posts were restored, but are gone again . This time I will not ask that they be restored, since I do not know if it was due to Bilbo's wishes . Sad to lose the inputs.

When I first saw it - I thought that it must be a software glitch - or even - gasp - a moderator error. If I had known that is was the poster's wishes - I would never have asked regarding it. My apologies:redface: to Bilbo, who seems to have wanted the deletions. It is a shame to lose valuable perspectives.

I am going to continue to leave my keel down. I am too afraid of the consequences should the cable break. Having the cable under constant tension means that it is rubbing the turning ball and at risk of wear. My dock is deep enough that the keel won't hit bottom.

Whenever the cable is in tension, there IS tension, and not only in the wire...
