Can you check the keel pin while the boat is in the water? Where do you look? Thanks.

Only if you wanna get wet

unless you go sailing and you notice a bunch of clunking sound.. near where the keel is. that mite be an indication of relacement.. the only way i know of is to get under the boat, to really check the pin.. you need to remove the keel. or at least lower it some

If it's on the trailer it's easier.

Tom's right. If you hear it then it should be looked at and that's much easier on the trailer. Have you checked the keel pin support bolts lately? If they come loose, and they do! they will ruin your day when they fall out. It the boat is on a trailer you can check the bolts and see the support brackets. By raising the boat above the trailer you can unbolt the keel or at least move the keel to check for wear. If she is in the water you will need to dive on her. Ray

No, not realy

Like the others have said. Only if it is really bad will the wear be obvoius in the water as told by the clunking sound. That is the noise of the keel hitting the sides of the keel trunk. Many people do not understand the Catalina keel pin design at first. It is unlike most others in that it is completely self-conainted on the underside of the hull. Nothing comes through the hull, so nothing is visible while the boat sits in the water. Best thing is to pull it out and get a close look. Regards, Ted
