I recently purchased a Catalina 22(1973). There is a locking pin that sets the keel(under the seat where table is). Anyway, looking at it, there is a ton of epoxy around it. It was like that for the seller. Should I repair it or leave as is.. Not sure how much work it would be.. Thanks in advance, Gagews

re:pin

Thanks for the response, John. It's very solid, like a brick.. No water leakage at all. One of the concerns that I had was that if the boat tiped over to much, that the keel would swing into the haul.. I guess it would take a lot for that, though..

Locking pin

I ground out my old one with a Dremmel and replaced it with the stainless steel locking strap available from the catalog, fiberglassed it in with good results. After saying that the thing works like a champ, I have to say I've never used it to lock the keel. I sail in Puget Sound and have sailed in 20 knot winds jib and main with no reefs and about a max of 25 degrees of heel (rail wet). No problems with the keel at all. My daughter and I had a "piece of wind" knock us over pretty far last year. I'm not sure how far we went over but we had water in the cockpit! No keel problem then either. Good luck.
